Thanks America for Not Living to the Your Stereotype

First I must say this is a praise thread and not one complaining.

I have not posted in here in awhile, man it seems like forever back to the days I was posting first here in 2004 (crazy how times fly since then), but I have seen some threads that I have lead me to create my owm for the first time in awhile.

Recently just came back from a vacation to the USA (not going to lie really beem nowhere in States before excluding Montana/North Dakota) and I must say the contrived notion that Americans are stupid, fat, and more or less rude is very off base.

Not saying there are no rotten apples (there is every country), but you would think what people say everyone would be an utter self obssessed asshole or something. I will tell you this, in my time there I received less rude treatment than I currently receive in Calgary from random people. The service was great down there with servers/bartenders being very thank-ful to tips (I come from a city where they are expected regardless of the server's lack of comptatence, I guess large breasts and no brain equal tip here for some reason).

I heard "excuse me", "please", and "thank-you" way more often than I hear here (not that I do not hear it a lot but I am discussing sterotype) and everyone was so polite be it other tourists or locals themselves, it was a breath of fresh air.

I by no means agree with a lot of policies in the USA (health insurance, Iraq, etc. as I am for the most part a very left leaning Canadian as most of the oldies here are aware of), however, that is a government issue and not a people issue. Be it Republican/Democrat/or whatvever I must say I really appreciated the time I had in your country and how the majority treated us great, thank-you for that.

It makes a good polite Canadian know that the majority of his neighbours are just like him, we may bear a different flag but at the end of the day we are one in the same. I guess what get's me; yes other countries (for the vasy majority) disagree with your policies but that is not the average person's fault at all, so I wish people would stop painting everyone with a broad brush and lump them in a single farce of a category, usually starting with the word stupid. No wonder some Americans (some posting in this forum) are so defensive, I would be after awhile to if I knew I was not that generalized catergorization of a person.

Add-in I was not hoping for everyone to be the sterotype, I was hoping things would turn out this way and am very happy they did.

I will, in the very near future, be planning another vacation to your country.

That is all.

Thank you....some of us attempt to be decent human beings...some of us actually succeed from time to time.

    FUCK OFF, CANUCK!

    Just kidding ;)

Glad you enjoyed your visit here. People are pretty good-hearted in this country. And for those of us that seem like jerks are probably just among those who are the most easily misled by our politicians and our media. America = good people watching bad television.

and i think that can be said of most people, regardless of nationality. stereotypes do reflect some truths, but they rarely reflect the overall reality of a people or a place. glad you had such a positive experience! :)

Well the service haven of America..Las Vegas/some other random locations...but my g/f who has been to a lot of places in America says she has always received stellar service no matter where she was. Also she has always been impressed about how Americans do not live up to hype (we had a huge conversation about this on our way back north).....

I guess that is why I made the defensive mindset comment that some have because I would have trouble getting called a Stupid Canadia,n if that was the stereotype...man after awhile it would piss me off and leave me bitter...

Yeah the service industry down there being so nice was not a shocker, however, it was your average person that was geniune. Trust me up here we are indoctrinated to think Americans are fat, dumb, and lazy (this coming from someone living in the fattest city in Canada funny enough), seriously no wonder some hold these reservations towards Americans.

Just with some threads made recently I felt I wanted to chime in and mention something good before jumping into my usual health-care threads of days gone...lol.....

Polaris...home of Harper...lol...not all Calgarians are that bad just seems a lot let money get to their head, I would put the sincerity of where I was way above here. Put it this way, on par, with my Saskatchewan roots....lol....

You're right. Canadians are some of the rudest people I've ever met in my life. Glad to see you're not one of them.

yups. If everyone views everyone else as individuals, the topic is moot.
Stereotypes are great for non-pc humour (at least how it relates to my sense of it), but not much else. I've been to the states many times and have never had a bad experience.
Glad you had fun RiC....(btw - goin to virginfest?)

Am I going to Virginfest, damn rights. Held out for the single day tickets that still cost me $94.

Wanted to also agree with a point made on various posts, it does really make a difference if you present yourself in a polite good manner and 9/10 you will receive it back.

I have always been told by many close friends SC is one of the most beautiful places they have been to. Will have to add that to my list of places to see down there. Next year might plan a big road trip through the south and check out a bunch of places.

Weird I just noticed looking at my name and the apostrophe has been removed that was present on the old board (log-in with my e-mail so I never noticed before). Weird.....

Kiawah Island and Seabrook island have some sweet courses ( the ocean course) is home of the 91 ? Ryder Cup. Talk about a hard course. nothin but fairway and sand dunes. Iv'e only played it once and barely broke 90. I use to be a cart attendant at another course cos I would never pay what they are asking for cart and green fee.( $180
But there are dozens of other courses that are a lot cheaper and just as fun.

    Stono Ferry
    Legend Oaks
    Patriots Point
    Bulls Bay

Yeah it's like a step back in time . Sometime I have to remind myself thatI live in one of the best towns in the country, but there are times like now when I would like to go live up in the mountains.
