What's with the clapping in the background?

I was just about to talk myself into The Fixer...I really was coming around. Then I noticed the clapping in the background. Um...really? Clapping? What the hell is going on here?

God love them for doing what the want...who am I to criticize. They deserve what ever they get/want to do. There are just a few things that seem, oh, I don't know, "odd" I guess.

Clapping in the background...ok, I'll work with it (biting tongue).

I hear it but not completely sure it's hand clapping. The first one is at the 22 second mark (if thats what people are talking about).

22 second mark, 53 second mark, and then 1:23 mark (I think). Let me say: I'm way to obsessing on this, as I usually do with PJ stuff. Totally my fault. I need help. But it is bugging me so I figured I'd throw it out there.

I hear ya, I can name a bunch of songs with sounds in them that drive me nuts. Sometimes just the way somone sings something can make me bonkers.

Alanis Morisette is a prime example for me.

What's with the clapping along to music at shows?

    Answer: It's fun!

completely agree...there are few things more fun than clapping/singing/fist pumping/shouting in unison with 15,000 other people. It's always my favorite part of the boots when Eddie lets the crowd take over. When the crowd really nails it, there is nothing better.

BUT, this isn't that. It's pop-song clapping. Whitney Houston. Again, I don;t want to pile on as I am a PJ addict. This thing is something I have a problem with. They have every right to do whatever the hell they want. To me, it just seems odd for them.

I agree with you...you're right. I've listened to the song waaaaay to many times. I need to stop drinking - coffee, beer, vitamin water, etc. I also probably need to stop listening to PJ for a while and stop taking 3 instances of clapping and expanding that into an inference that PJ has become Whitney Houston. Wow, that was stupid.

Yet, these are the things I think about at 10 pm - why is there a hand clap in there? That seems odd. Maybe electo-shock therapy is a good idea.

    Ahahaha! This is funny shit.

But seriously, if you don't ask the hard questions, who will?

Yea I like the clap myself, I was just saying I know how he feels about some songs.

Why do you come to the forum if it pisses you off that much?

I think the hand-claps fit the song well.......its not like they are every 5 seconds.....only in certain spots. Actually I didn't even notice them until about four or five listens....

And yes Get Right has hand claps as well

I was trying to put my finger on what other song has clapping! Thats it!

But seriously, what's wrong with clapping? Why is it associated with pop music, and what is bad about pop music? Pearl Jam has had many pop hits. "pop" is just short for popular... Plenty of good, respectable artists out there that write pop music.

Should Pearl Jam get rid of their guitars because guitars can be found in pop music?

What do you people do for fun on weekends. Seriously.

I hear ya. I hope you didn't take that comment maliciously. I've just been wondering that about some people on here lately.

It just sounds forced to me, that's all. The guitar comment is just silly, c'mon. And as I've said, I'm WAY HYPER CRITICAL to a fault with this song. At the end of the day, it's probably a stupid post. It just happened to cross my mind so I threw it on the board. Lesson learned: next time, take my time and don't rush. That's what she said.

not as blatent as the "friends" theme song... but it is kindof an annoying part of the song... couldve been more of a drum thing and less of a cheesy clap - if it needs to be there at all... but i guess you hear alot of clapping in early beatles stuff... so maybe theyre coming at it more like that

not enough to spoil the song for me

not at all. I understand. I'm not here to pile on. As I've said many times to friends, they could recite the alphabet and not only would I defend their right to release that as a single, I'd download it, buy the vinyl copy and see then in concert on the off chance that they recite the alphabet while playing acoustic. They've payed me back 1,000 times over at this point. Anything they do I'm ultimately going to be happy with.

All that being said, they just seem to be trying a little to hard with Fixer and the clapping struck me the wrong way. Silly/stupid I know. But that's also what keeps me coming back. If they weren't such a meaningful part of who I am, I just wouldn't care.

Maybe the album version won't have the clapping?.. maybe it sounds oddly placed for the band, but its catchy! I think it just makes the song more fun.. I know people around here don't favor fun songs by the band.

It wasn't my intention to come across the way I did lol. There's just so many complaints on the forum these days, I lose my patience! It's not as if hand claps are a new thing in music. PJ has used them before!
