songs you just realized don't suck

edited July 2009 in The Porch
over the last few months...

Deep - Always skipped past it to get to Release (along with Garden), but suddenly i think this song rocks. The early live cuts as well as the new ones are furious! Its moved up quite a bit on my favorite Ten.

Habit - this song always annoyed the hell out me. i hated that it was in the middle of a great album and usually skipped it. then one day i let it play and really got into the little jam at the end (shame about the fade). now i love the whole thing.

Life Wasted - still dont like the first minute or so ( why are so many of their new songs so jerky at the beginning?), but everything else is pretty badass.

I remember not being a fan of Nothing As It Seems when it first came out. I stayed up really late to listen to it on the Radio 1 (UK) rock show, they left it right to the end of the show to play it, and they finally did, I was like "is that it". Just not what I was expecting at all. I wanted something rocking and anthemic and it was the absolute opposite! I think I was just disappointed because the lead off single from Yield (Given Tof Fly) was such a huge surprise after Vitalogy and No Code. But as I've gotten older I've learned to appreciate things for what they are, and not to criticise them for what they're not. So now I love NAIS, the guitar work is awesome, and I love its dark vibe.

It's the same thing with The Fixer. So many people are bitching about it not being the song they wanted or expected, but if you judge it for what it is, a light-hearted slice of uplifting pop, and not for what it's not, i.e a brooding, introspective, lyrical masterpiece - then people might find they enjoy it a bit more.

I like "Leash" now even though I'm not a big fan of the lyrics.

I'll add "I'm Open" to that list - beautiful song.

Garden is an excellent song, it almost sounds like a song that could do very well on the alt-rock/pop charts these days.

But a song that sort of grew on me was probably Do the Evolution. First time I heard it I didn't even think it was Pearl Jam, I thought it was like the Sex Pistols or something like that. Took me a few listens to realize it was PJ and it was actually a good song.

ugh... the one PJ song that has plagued me for years is Dissident... I really disliked it for the longest time... a few years ago I finally came around.

I can see why. It just sounds so generic compared to other songs on Vs.

I don't know that I ever thought it sucked, but I was listening to the Newcastle '06 boot 8 miles into a 10 mile run this morning and on the verge of throwing in the towel when I heard "Undone" for the first time in ages... got me through the rest of the run!

Most of these songs I just realized how awesome they are when I heard them live.

Glorified G/Satan's Bed from Mansfield Night 2 (Glorified G is probably my favorite song now)

    W.M.A from MSG Night 2

Also realised I enjoy the studio version of Blood a lot.

Honestly, I never liked "Tremor Christ" until lately. Too add to that list, "Blood" never did it for me either. All that changed in the last year or so.

Love Boat Captain doesn't really suck when you get down to it. the ending especially is nice. Still think the title sucks though. I mean can anyone from usa (and some worldwide fans) NOT think about the cheesy television show from the 70s-80s when you hear the words "Love Boat"? I know, maybe it's meant to be humorous, but ehhh..

I never thought Sleight of Hand sucked, but I was too young to realize the impact of the song and appreciate it when it first came out. It really resonates with me now - Kinda wish I was still too carefree to understand! ;)

Not songs that sucked, but ones that I app. more now I've heard them live:

Porch - love the version on the 3rd Gorge show, the middle bit, the "hold my hand, walk beside me" bit, when it kicks back in after an improv that seems to go on for ages (in a good way). Awesome example of how a song has evolved during the live shows.

Present Tense - No Code is their best album (it's a scientific fact!), but it wasn't until I heard it live in London in 2007 that this became my fave song (previously it had been Release).

Rats - Now I didn't much care for this at all on record, but again, hearing it live (Germany 07) really changed my outlook on this little number.
