The Fixer-Instrumental
just wanted to get your thoughts on The Fixer if you first heard it without the vocals. ONLY INSTRUMENTAL. would you have liked just the music? thoughts?
the reason i ask is because i've read comments about not liking the lyrics, layering of the vocals, etc.

I died. I died and you just stood there. I died and you watched. I died and you walked by and said no. I'm dead.

I have a feeling that this will be my least favorite song on Backspacer, and that the rest of it will be pretty awesome.

Are you talking out of your ass?
Once of the biggest reasons I latched onto PJ originally was because of the strength of the instrumentation and composition apart from the lyrics. Musically I think Ten still stands up over time as energetic and completely original. Sure McCready acknowledges his little nods and winks to SRV and Ace Frehley on the album, but Gossard's rhythms and riffs are still unparalleled (to me). I remember listening to Ten on repeat for hours and digging past the vocals to hear the band musically unfold and explode.
What I hear on the new single is a more constrained effort. But please don't take that to mean that I think they are holding back. I just think it's a good representation of where they are at right now. (The dynamics of the band are different. They have a different member and much time has passed. Much experience has been gained through touring and playing and, in all honesty, tastes have probably changed.)
What I really mean by "constrained" is that I think PJ sounds really tight on "The Fixer." Particularly the bands focus on rhythm and timing. It's much more metronome-like rather than having the "swing" of songs from their earlier catalogue. The impression I have is that everything is hitting on the 2nd and the 4th beats of each measure and there is less counter melody in the background.
