I'll be flying into LA from Australia and have 10C for LA4. I'm considering hoping to Austin to see The Sunday line up with PJ and then spending a day exploring Austin and then back to LA for the Gibson show - before going to NYC for a week. Can anyone recomend a hotel/travel method close to the gig but also handy to wander around Downtown like a slack jawed tourist? Anything else i should know about Austin and attending that particular festival?

Peace!

well, if you aren't going to be renting a car, you'll have to stay downtown. be prepared to pay a bit more for your hotel room. the shuttle picks up downtown & will take you right to the venue (Zilker Park). so, if you stay downtown, you'll be close to the shuttle and to all of the venues that will be hosting the aftershows.

    Perfectly stated above.

Staying downtown is your best bet if you want to walk around and check out everything. Also, downtown isn't far from Zilker Park and there really aren't any hotels super closed to the park.

Cheers, I might even have to relive my backpacking days and stay in a hostel downtown - although I suspect a 40 year old in a backpackers is about as welcome as a fart in an elevator - maybe the hotel room is a better option.

Book soon. I'd be surprised if the hostels have any rooms left, those are always the first to go. Try priceline.com for a good rate on a hotel downtown. The Omni, the Hyatt, the Radisson and the Embassy Suites are all within walking distance of the fest and downtown.

You are looking at around $300 a night right now for anything downtown. I am staying a bit South which is not ideal but there are plently of ACL'ers staying there. It is about 3.5 miles out of Downtown and will save you a couple hundred bucks. Cabs can be a pain in the ass but there is also a bus that takes you right into downtown where the shuttle takes you to Zilker.
