Anyone have one that trips people up? I have one evidently.

I have co-workers I have worked with for years who still can't spell and/or pronounce my name. I even have a close friend who can't get it. I wish I had a name like Smith or Brown.:P

Ha, hey Libs, I know exactly how you feel-you know my last name...doesn't get any more Italian than that.I must admit, I didn't think you were Italian! I knew there was something I liked about you! And like someone else said, I don't even bother using my last name for intros cuz they just don't get it. And it's not hard, it's pronounced just like it's spelled! *Sigh* And DTD, you'll have to tell me next time I see you in NYC!!

ah, I thought I told you that I was Italian.. :) Yeah you're name is a mouthful LD :P I don't think it's hard but I know what you mean.

Yeah, Im sorry we couldn't meet up the last time. The next time PJ makes it to NYC we will have to meet up :)

Yeah, I'm sicilian too..well mostly. No one seems to have heard of our name. I always want to do research and try to find out where exactly my ancestors are from. My grandfather seems to know zip... :? but then again he wasn't much of a grandparent..different thread!

Not sicilian but Northern Italy. My name (maiden name) is not difficult but people seemed to have some kind of a block with it. Pronounced and spelt in so many ways that it was not even recognisable as my name!

libragirl... do your research - it's fantastic when you find things out! When my family moved to Brussels many, many years ago, we were VERY suprised to find another listing with our name in the phone book. We contacted these people and all of a sudden a whole new 'family' was there. At one time, two brothers left Italy, one for North America (US) and one for South America (Argentina) - they were from the south america 'branch'. Through this, we found we still had land in Italy and a cousin spent 3 years researching the family now that they had found the 'north american link'. He went as far back as the 11th century. So go girl... find out about your family!

Yeah, I want to do some research. I know there are those websites, like ancestry.com but I'm not sure if that info is always accurate. Im skeptical. Plus I may not want to find out some stuff..lol

I definitely have one of those. One of those letters that should not be there under normal circumstances. I am constantly getting credit cards spelled wrong (even ones that because of this letter make them come up with a whole different name  ) and always have to spell it SLOWLY eventhough it's not so hard.

I went on that website and there are one are fewer people with my whole name..and 1,431,781 people who share my first name in the U.S. My name is Jennifer, need I say more..lol

Yeah it's frustrating..i remember the college i went to had my name wrong in their records. I had to complete a change of name form so it could be correct and it wouldn't go on my degree misspelled..lol
This reminds me of my college memories:

I grew up in NJ, and went to school in Michigan. My last name has 4 syllables and 3 i's in the name. Whenever I spelled out my name and said I, people thought I was saying A. No, it's I, like igloo not A! I guess my accent was stronger than I thought. ;)

Yup. But for some reason it's my first name that seems to give people the most problems.

My surname was always pronounced wrong in school, used to annoy me grrr.
Sometimes to this day it still is but everyone at work surprisingly can pronounce it correct.
Those that pronounce it wrong don't sound the K, they think the first letter of my surname (K) is silent.

I think I probabaly have the most embarrassing maiden name.

    Hanberger

You can imagine all the variations of how it was pronounced. My most unusual nickname at school was 'paint brains', which was derived from Berger paints (don't know if they are still on the go).

I don't think anybody anyone ever pronounced my name correctly when it was called out anywhere! It become even more annoying when I became vegetarian at 16. I was a bit of a hippy in those days so to have someone shout out my name incorrectly pronounced brought much joviality to the general public.

Oh how I love my husband and his ordinary, English name. Not once has it caused embarrassment! My poor brother however has had to continue living with it, and as he is in the British Army repeatedly gets it shouted about. :D

It's not that my given name(Heywood) & surname(Jablome) is that hard to pronounce, it's just that when they
are said together it's a little embarrassing.

Just had a look for a few people on that weblink - the UK one.

I was a bit concerned as my son's name is not listed as a person in the UK. I know he's here, he's spent most of the day lying on the sofa in his dressing gown.

    Perhaps it's because he's only 12? :o

My name is pretty common, but can be spelt four different ways so I end up having to spell it out everytime anyway...I just spell it immediately after saying it, don't bother waiting to be asked...

Yes, I'll pronounce my very English last name as distinctly as possible and people will still ask me to spell it. After I spell it, they'll say (in the stupidest sounding voice): "OH. Just like it sounds."
