EV Adelaide 22-11-2006 ... yep I was there ... THANKS!
Entirely baseless...probably started because Mike M. is on WRXP tomorrow with Matt Pinfield doing PJ promo.
The story is that Goldenvoice has known about Adam's cancer for a week or so. The first call made by GV was to PJ inquiring about replacing BB's on Friday night.
GV don't want a long period of time to go without a headliner so it would make sense to make a deal, let Adam announce, give it a day...announce replacement headliner.
It's a great story and maybe...MAYBE...who know's?

It's probably baseless but not out of the question.
They're going to need another headliner to replace the Beastie Boys and considering who is available and the audience they're targeting, PJ fits it perfectly. Radiohead played last year, Kings of Leon / Paul McCartney are already in the area that month; same with the Killers. Nine Inch Nails is dunzo. DMB doesn't really fit the crowd that they're aiming for ('Coachella East'); neither does Phish. Rage/Chili Peppers would have to come out of hiatus. Who knows what the Cure are up to.
They're going for someone just as big if not bigger than the Beastie Boys to satisfy the people upset about them canceling and who better than PJ?

Does PJ fit the bill if they are goin for coachella type vibe? I always thought it was a bit more artsy and a little less straight up rock and roll.

This last point is a good one. I just don't know that they'd be able to get everything ready in time. I know in that recent phone interview Ed said that they won't really rehearse much before the upcoming tour, but that's assuming a start date of August 8. All Points West cuts their prep time in more than half. Even if you don't need to rehearse much, it's very different to switch your mindset to playing a festival show in a week and a half.
It would be awesome if they could pull it off, but it would be quite the stretch to make it happen.

1-Availabilty
2-Size of band somewhat comparable to canceled headliner
3-In playing shape, able to play, with gear ready to travel
4-Band does not have conflicting interests.
PJ fits the first three conditions. The last one is that it MAY interfere with a possible 3rd and/or 4th date in Philly. It's less likely they will sell Philly tickets when they're playing NJ before. They may also have an agreement with their promoter(s) that their listed tour will be the only US shows they do this summer/fall, which gives the promoter a better chance of selling those tickets.
I think it's natural that we think PJ may step in. I think PJ may be interested in stepping in. I'm hoping they will step in. There's a lot to be considered on this, and it may not be up to them.

I wonder if the announcement a possible 3rd Phil show is being held-up if the band is negotiating with APW. Even is PJ is contractually "locked-out" from doing show in the area, GV could strike a deal where the Phil promoter gets a cut of the APW ticket sales on PJ's day...this would compensate the promoter for any profits lost due to an addtl area show.
Yeah Yeah Yeahs just replaced them at Lolla....eh....I do not think they can headline a fest.
Yeah Yeah Yeahs are also already on the bill for APW but not as a headliner...don't think they could be moved up to one...that would upset alot of ppl that already bought tix b/c then who would replace YYY

At APW, Beastie Boys are the de facto headliners for one of the nights. At Lolla, they'd be playing opposite of another band. Hence why YYY's filling in isn't all that bad, as if you don't like them, you could go see the other headlining act (which is Tool).
Outside Lands / ACL / APW are probably going to need a band just as big as the Beasties (if not bigger) to fill in as Beasties were playing the headlining slot at those three festivals, whereas at Lolla they would have been the second biggest band playing at that time.
Isn't Coldplay the headliner, then Tool, then Beastie Boys?
I highly doubt PJ is going to take co co headliner and let Coldplay headline over them.
What does that mean? Its 3 headliners, one each night.
At outside lands its PJ, Dave and was the Beasties. No one is headlining over anyone else in that set up.
Usually the last big band to play is the headliner. Coldplay is playing on the last day so that would make them the headliner no?
That's just semantics. I would hope, and I believe, that if Pearl Jam were approached to fill in, and it were logistically possible, that being a headliner but not a festival closer wouldn't prevent them from doing it.

NO. There's THREE days, THREE separate headliners. None moreso than the other. It's not any more complicated than that. A Sunday headlining spot is no bigger or more important than a Friday headlining spot.

Exactly. Last year Radiohead headlined nights 1 & 2 and Jack Johnson headlined night 3.
