Beastie Boy Adam Yauch Has Cancer
Adam Yauch, who goes by the stage name MCA in the legendary Beastie Boys, has announced that he has cancer and that the Beasties have been forced to postpone all tour dates at this time.
In a video released by the band, Yauch begins by telling fans he has some "pretty heavy news." He then goes on to say that the Beastie Boys "have to cancel a bunch of our shows coming up" because he had "been feeling this little lump in my throat ... I actually have a form of cancer in the gland, and it's in a gland called the parotid gland, and it's in a lymph node in that area."

This sad news indeed I wish for him and his family the best and a speedy recovery.

This is a bummer. But he says it's treatable.

Here's a video of him and Adrock talking about it:

Beastie Boys delay album, tour over Yauch cancer

    (AFP) – Jul 20, 2009

LOS ANGELES — Hip-hop outfit the Beastie Boys have delayed their upcoming tour and album release after founding member Adam Yauch was diagnosed with cancer, the band said Monday.

In a video message posted on the band's website, Yauch, better known by his stage name MCA, told fans he was to undergo an operation next week after being diagnosed with cancer in a salivary gland.

The 44-year-old musician, who appeared alongside fellow member Adam Horowitz, said in the statement he had noticed a "little lump" in his throat around two months ago which he recently reported to his doctor.

"He sent me to a specialist and they did tests and I actually have a form of cancer in the parotid gland and a lymph node," Yauch said.

"I am going to have to have surgery next week and then after that have some radiation localized in that area."

Yauch said the cancer had been detected early and he was expected to recover from what he described as a "pain in the ass."

"The good news is that they did scans in my body and it's only localized in that one area, not in a place that affects my voice," he said.

"It's a little bit of a setback. It's a pain in the ass but it's something that's very treatable and in most cases they're able to get rid of it completely."

The Beastie Boys had been due to release their latest album "Hot Sauce Committee Part 1" on September 15, 2009. The band had also scheduled seven concerts across the United States and Canada from July 31 and October 2.

With Beastie Boy Adam 'MCA' Yauch sidelined with cancer in his throat, the hip hop group was forced to pull out of concert dates, which included their headlining gig at the All Points West festival in Jersey City, N.J., this weekend. Fortunately for them and the fans in attendance, Jay-Z stepped up to fill in, and also led a raucous tribute to the Beasties and Yauch.

E-mail just received from the Beastie Boy's mailing list:

    hey all,

    hope you are doing well.

so i'm about a week and a half out of surgery now and rapidly recovering from it. i haven't taken any of the pain meds, which supposedly speeds along the healing process, or should i say, taking them slows it down. anyway, i spent 1 night at the hospital after the surgery. the hospital was too crazy to get any rest so i headed home to relax, have home cooked food and hang out with the family.

i'm pretty well detoxed from the anesthesia that they pumped me up with to keep me under for all that time. that took several days to get out of my system. my neck and jaw are still pretty stiff from the surgery, but it gets better everyday. had the stitches out this past monday... so things are moving along.

but no sooner am i on the mend from this first torture than are they lining up the next one. the next line of treatment will be radiation. that involves blasting you with some kind of beam for a few minutes a day, 5 days a week, for about 7 weeks. that will start in a few weeks...

saw the jay-z cover of no sleep, and the coldplay one of fight for your right from APW on youtube. good shit. and i heard karen o wore a "get well MCA" armband, and that q-tip gave a shout out too..... very kind of them.

just wanted to thank them and everyone else who sent positive thoughts my way. i do think that all of the well wishes have contributed to the fact that my treatment and recovery are going well.

much love back at all of you!

    Another update from Adam

    "hey all,

so i just got back from dharamsala, india. went over there to see some tibetan doctors, but as it worked out, the Dalai Lama was giving a 3 day teaching, so i was able to attend that as well.

i'm feeling healthy, strong and hopeful that i've beaten this thing, but of course time will tell. i'm taking tibetan medicine and at the recommendation of the tibetan doctors i've been eating a vegan/organic diet, which surprisingly enough was harder to do in india than it is now that i'm back home. here i can just shop for the right food and cook... a lot easier than depending on restaurants.

when i was in india i visited an ani gompa (a nunnery) called jamyang choling. they did a puja (religious ceremony) for me to help me get well. one nun said to me "we do prayers and then you are better." so i've got that going for me, which is nice.

i will put a link to their web site (below) but it doesn't do justice to how amazing it is to actually go there and hang out with them. i sponsor a few nuns at jamyang choling. there are about 125 nuns there now and more keep joining. when i first met them i think there were only 13 and they were living in some abandoned cow sheds. then they bought some land with some donations, and with more donations they started building rooms for housing, classrooms, a prayer hall, 2 stoopas..... they now live on a beautiful complex in this incredibly lush, peaceful patch of land in lower dharamsala. cows walking around, birds singing, they are growing mangoes and bananas, and they have a whole garden where they grow herbs and vegetables.

i asked how many nuns still need sponsorship. they said 50. it's about $350 a year to sponsor a nun if you are interested.

    http://www.jamchoebuddhistdialectics.org/

we have not set a new release date for the record yet, but i'm hoping it'll be in the first half of next year. looking forward to that, but in the meantime, i'm just enjoying a little downtime in massachusetts, taking walks in the woods and hanging out with the family.... still doing a little work related to oscilloscope, watching screeners and attending some screenings, but for the most part, just laying low.

if you are interested i'll send out some little updates every now and then on the oscilloscope twitter account.

    http://twitter.com/oscopelabs

thanks again for all of the well wishes and prayers, and the letters were great too, brought a smile to my face reading them.

    talk to you soon,

    yauch"

So I guess this isn't a cancer update ... but suggests he is still battling. The latest e-mail from Adam

    "hello,

wanted to send this out to you guys in case you were into it, or wanted to give it to anyone who you think might be.

a few friends and i are meditating at the same time twice a day. 9:30am and 6:30pm eastern standard time, for about an hour and half.

we are picturing smashing apart all of the cancer cells in the world.

we are visualizing taking the energy away from the cancer, and then sending it back at the cancer as lightening bolts that will break apart the DNA and RNA of the cells. if you have the time, please join us in whipping up this lightening storm. mind over matter......

if you prefer to sit then sit, but if you are not used to meditating, or sitting quietly doesn't sound like fun, put on some music and dance while you do the visualization, and if you want to do it at some other time, or picture curing some other illness that's fine too. yoko will be joining the meditation by visualizing all of us dancing with joy to celebrate the world without cancer. all variations are welcome. this is really just being done with a wish for all beings to be cured of all illnesses and to find true lasting happiness.

i'll also be saying prayers for the earthquake victims in tibet, so join in on that if you can too.

please feel free to pass this onto anyone who you think may find it interesting.

    with all my love,

    adam yauch"
