I remember reading a while ago that Dave Grohl almost became a PJ member, just around the release of Vitalogy maybe. I wonder what that would have been like, I really like Grohl, but would we have got albums like No Code and Yield? Any thoughts?

I don't think he was ever really gonna become their drummer. Nirvana just ended and Dave A just got fired so it was a typical rumor to begin going around

I thought I read somewhere that PJ knew he was extremely talented and sort of told him to go off and do something on his own opposed to drumming for the band. I would imagine the invitation was open, but PJ felt his talent would've been better used elsewhere

I'm sure there were plenty of rumors going around, but I remember reading in RS that it was never really an option - PJ wasn't really interested and he wanted to play guitar.

I remember Courtney Love freaking out about those rumors for some reason. Ed or Dave told Rolling Stone "Tell her to relax. It isn't going to happen".

That's my description of Matt. But seriously, I think PJ wanted Irons at that time.

I believe it was only guest appearances at the end in 1995, never full shows.

Probably not, but if Matt leaves to reform Soundgarden, it would be awesome if the band could talk Grohl into ditching the Foos to play drums for them ;)

Yeah, even during the Nirvana days Dave was doing his own stuff "on the side" as he's said for years.

He all along wanted to write, play guitar and sing.
Pretty sure it was all rumors.

I'd rather see Jimmy Chamberlain!! He's available, and his drumming is like a fusion of Matt Cameron's stamina and tom-playing, and Dave Abbruzzese's understanding of drum dynamics and precision.

  • Grohl was actually in Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers for a short while - he played "You Don't Know How It Feels" and "Honey Bee" with them on SNL.

Dave wouldn't have been a good fit for PJ. He and Ed both have very strong personalities and definately would've clashed. I don't think dave would have stayed with Nirvana forever if Kurt was still alive. He is a very talented frontman/musician aside from his super talent -the drums. Saw them live (at the Spectrum) and changed my whole view of that band... Dave was hilarious and they rocked that place. If you ever have a chance to see them live, don't miss them, love them or not.

Dave would have ultimately had to do what he did with Nirvana, take a back seat and let others lead the band, which he would have only put up with for so long.

Don't underestimate Grohl's drumming though, he's now considered a guitarist/singer, but not only is his best instrument drums, he's one of the best drummers in the world, even of all time. Any song is noticeably better for Dave's drumming - and that's a remarkable thing for a drummer.

  • that would have be awesome. Really I think at that time he would of been in more awe then having an I need the spot light type of attitude. He would have written some cool songs and he would of been singing some odd tracks instead of Gossard, ha. I think he would have fit in because he would have adapted, he is that good. Oh well only wishful thinking now.

That'd be cool. If he's clean, he might really love playing for a major band that's not ruled by an egomaniac like Billy.

A song for the dead is very impressive, Dave is an animal on that song.
