Will Vs. reissue be mostly demos?

I know that there will probably be no mention of the Vs. reissue until way after Backspacer is released but I was just wondering what the bonus material might be. Since most and probably all of the B-sides from Vs. have already been released, will the bonus tracks just be demos of the tracks on the album? Personally, I'm not too fond of hearing the demos of finished songs, they usually end up sounding too weak and pointless like SOLAT and Breath from Ten Redux. And sure it's interesting to hear the songs in there beginning stages, but we all go back to the finshed songs anyway. So what's the point of releasing demos? And I'm not just talking about PJ, but other bands too. I've purchased some Deluxe Editions and they all have demos. What's the deal?

I like to hear demos because they are sometimes different and maybe be better than the piece of music originally released.
  • Could be demos, but I'm hoping we get a bit more vault action with Vs. Open it Up!!!
  • I agree, I don't find demos that interesting unless the change is really significant like the Light Years demo. If the arrangement in the demo is different its cool, otherwise I'd prefer Bside/Instrumental/Video performance no matter how lame or unfinished :D

There are many demos out there that we don't know exist. I am sure there are at least a couple from vs. that we'll hear for the first time on the reissue...

I thought that SOLAT demo was frickin awesome! I absolutely LOVE how raw it sounds, it doesnt even really sound like a demo to me. Anyways.... I imagine there will be some surprises on the VS reissue...on Lost Dogs, I keep looking at the picture of the one shelf that has their recordings...man to get in there for a day!

    Interesting thread..

as a fan, I would not mind hearing some crazy sounds and demos.. I dig Pearl Jam

My question is when will they re re lease the new leash issue of VS?

if Sony wants all Epics out by 2011 they had better get bizzienessy, eh?
Down the street you can hear her scream youre a disgrace
As she slams the door in his drunken face
    And now he stands outside
And all the neighbours start to gossip and drool
He cries oh, girl you must be mad,
What happened to the sweet love you and me had?
Against the door he leans and starts a scene,
And his tears fall and burn the garden green

No i haven't heard too many demos that stand out above the final recording.

regarding demos... think of how many people (myself included) think that the "bootleg" version of brother is superior to the lost dogs version and the redux version as well... for all practical purposes, the bootleg version IS the demo... this alone should validate the release of demos.

sometimes, things can get distilled out in the finished, studio versions. in the biz, we call this "demo-itis"... the fact that sometimes, you get it right the very first time... and sometimes you cannot get back there.
  • +1 for loving SOLAT on there

    And the version of Brother

plus a recording studio to play the masters on... but at least you'd get to mix how much guitar, vocals, drums, etc you'd want to hear. :D

were there even really any non-album b-sides from Vs. that were not simply live versions of previously released songs? as i type i can't think of any "true" b-sides from that era!?!?

Alone and the "acoustic" version of Elderly Woman...

    Crazy Mary
    Sonic Reducer
    Angel
Hard to Imagine (already on LD, though)

and I think there was at least an instrumental version of Betterman recorded during the Vs. sessions.

There was a mention of a slow, festering version of 'Leash' in a flimsy, yet informative book titled "Pearl Jam The Illustrated Story" by Allan Jones. In the same chapter, Eddie states "...we recorded twice as many songs as there are on the record, and they were all ready to go". So hopefully, they didn't exhaust all of that material on Vitalogy and Lost Dogs. An interview with Jeff on billboard.com makes certain we have yet to hear a few gems. "I definitely have amazing memories of some songs off Vs. I know there's three totally finished amazing songs that don't have any vocals or lyrics and melodies."

As for the reissues themselves, they may wind up appointed by a chronological era, rather than an album by album basis. Ten, being the monolith that it is, could be the only one distinguished enough to warrant its own reissue.

    ^ yeah, i've heard a theory that the next boxsets will be 1) vs./vitalogy (the Dave A era); 2) no code/yield (jack's era); and 3) binaural/riot act (matt's era).

They could have lots of b-sides we dont even have a fucking clue about, you dont know how many songs were written for each album, think of the picture of the tape wall on the inside cover of Lost Dogs.

I hope this is how it's done. It would make the most sense.

It'll be interesting to see how they'll remove Dave's image from his own albums though.
