Will Eddies voice be strained on Backspacer?

You think it will be as strained and struggling on Backspacer as on S/T (and the live renditions of those songs) or will Eddie have returned to his former self? :)

The question crossed my mind as well. It may be time for him to cut back from two-plus bottles of red to a meager 750 milliliters. Then again, maybe not.

It may have more to do with cigarettes.

From the Fixer clip, sounds like Obrien was using a few tricks to make Ed sound smoother.
  • I think maybe he had a cold or something. This 'strain' your talking about shows up occassionally on web footage (Present Tense at the ED Sulivan theatre from 06) but you listen to the boots, esp Hartford 08 and his voice is amazing. On other recordings he does seem to back off a little on parts of State of Love and Trust and Breath for one reason or another but I sure don't think its because can't hit those notes.

I admit to having caught on to Pearl Jam a little later later than most. Listening to 'Life Wasted' on the radio got me hooked. Frankly I kind of like that voice now more than during the Ten & VS era. Mellowed out but real powerful when called for. Long live that voice. I think the new CD is just going to rock, I can't wait.

I want this topic to go away and I am a thread killer so this will disappear. Besides, who are we to criticize?

    Thank you.

I guess the strain on his voice doesn't bother me as much as it does others. I mean, the guy's human. He's getting older and he's been singing his whole life, it can't be easy to keep up the same level of singing ability throughout your entire life.

He should sound great on the album....his voice is fine for sitting in the studio and taking cuts one at a time.
The thing that worries me is if they try to do a full tour around the album next year......

Ed knows it better than any of us.......I am sure he is fully aware of his voice and will do whatever he thinks is necessary.

Got some already has cleaner/better vocal delivery than anything on Self-Titled........Ed basically has to growl through all of the rockers on S/T and its very hard to do live

No. I'm sure Brendan O'Brien demands perfection out of everyone and will not settle for anything less than perfect from Eddie.

It's hard to explain, but he sounds kinda computery..it's 'cos theyve double tracked a lotta the vocals (John Lennon and Bowie used to get double tracked, it's sposed to fill out the vocal)
But it sounds odd..we'll get used to it..it fits in context with the production.

I don't think his voice was that big of a "problem" on the 06 tour, listening to the older songs he sounds great. I just listened to TREMOR CHRIST, ALONE and CROWN OF THORNS from the 06-tour and sounded great.

    But...

... the way he sings Life Wasted, WWS, Marker sounds so strained/forced and in my opinion bad. And it's the same on the album, so I'm guessing he want it to have a Raw/punkish sound but it doesn't work for me.

The little snippet of The Fixer I heard it sounds sort of like the strained singing on S/T. I don't like it.
I more like the way he sings the rock songs on Vitalogy. Poweful, angry, screaming but not strained/Winded etc.

But I think Eddie handles the older songs great so it's the style for the new songs I don't like. It was the factor, for me, that made S/T grow old really fast, too fast.

Too bad for you. This isnt '94 anymore. Progress. His voice sounds fine, it's fucking rock and roll. Not an opera.
  • He sounded great in Atlanta a couple of weeks ago...of course on a more mellow set...which I prefer.

If he had quit, then he fell off the wagon when he lit up for "Story Time With Uncle Ed," at the first Tower Theatre show.

I've posted this a few times and got a lot of flak for it.

In the last 3-4 years, Ed has struggled quite a bit vocally w/ PJ.
His solo shows seemed a little better, but those songs don't require a lot of range.

I do think he still has the best voice in rock, but him getting winded, pulling off the mic live, and really struggling to hit "higher" notes, and not being able to hold/sustain a note is very evident.

I think he should be able to do what he wants, but IMO the smoking has really done some damage.
I hate using examples, but look at Chris Cornell. He too was sounding rough for a while, he stopped smoking and he now sounds as good as he did in '92.
