has anybody ever tried stand up comedy?

where i live we have this stand up comedy place and iv always wanted to write jokes and try it out but i dont know the process or mind set to do it. i can write songs and poems but when it comes to jokes i go blank. i guess everybody has a different process. i guess you could tell funny storys, use real personal experince, make things up? my question is has anybody done this and what was your process?

    I'd like to write jokes for a comedian. I think I have a few gems, but not enough material for myself... and I can't be in front of crowds and have to perform.

    All you have to do is write a bunch of jokes,
    write in a bunch of transitions between jokes,
    preform
    find out what works and what bombs
    then rewrite your act from there

    easier said then done obviously
