do you think the earth and the moon could be connected with rope? i think it could if you had enough slack to make up for the moon moving closer and further from earth and the earth spinning. it could not be normal rope.

also the moon is continually moving away from the earth by 1 1/2 inch per year so you'd have to keep letting the rope out!

no way, his sister in law thread was better. he lied to us and said she would wink at him or blow kisses right while her sister (his wife) was watching TV.

Well I believe the same side of the moon is facing us. Assuming that's right attaching the rope to the moon would not present many problems. Attaching it to the Earth would be much more difficult. I'm not sure of the Moon's path of rotation around the Earth but I believe it has a wide range of variance. Therefore attaching the rope to the Earth would prove to be improbable. Perhaps a rope attached near the magnetic north pole, provided with the required slack, could in fact be attached to a large enough pivot to allow for the variances in the Moon's orbit.

I just hope that a NASA engineer doesn't haphazardly stand with one foot inside the spool of rope when the rocket takes off or they are in for one hell of a ride.

I'm thinking some 40 pound test fishing line might do the trick.

yah i was just gonna mention this... must be possible... wonder how long the moon elevator trip would take... and how much it would cost... would definitely be a cool view

i can think of no better way of spending the moon elevator budget right now

There is some talk that in the future, to make space visiting more accessible they will create somewhat of a satellite that will be just into space, and a type of tether will be attached, and then instead of flying machines needed, it'll just need a type of elevator to go up and down the tether. This may be similar to the moon one that was just mentioned.

Here's the question: Why would you want to tie the earth to the moon?

How exactly would that work? The earth and the moon are spinning in different directions. The "rope" would quickly start wrapping around one or the other, or both.

Plenty to be learned from space. I don't think its a waste at all. Saying that is like saying, why the fuck did we invent boats.. maybe we should all just stay put, be content with what we know and not try to push our minds.. I for one want to know as much as I can about the universe that created me before I die.

If you said the rope was too small to be revealed by even our most powerful telescope, then we would not be able to disprove you ;)

Just use stuff like the chain that the Romulan captain used to connect the red matter device to the planet in the latest Star Trek movie - that looked pretty strong.
