The day I have most dreaded UPDATE

Well, after 2 great days ( getting tickets to L.A. and San Diego ) I just got the news I have dreaded.

My dog Zillah ( the handsome fella in my avatar ) has lymphoma. He will be 13 in Oct. so he is up there in age.
Now I have to make some tough choices. Chemo, which will give him about a year at his age. Or steroids, which will help with any pain, his appetite and only give
him 3 to 4 months.

I'm sitting at my desk doing everything I can not to lose it in front of the people I work with.

I feel lost.

UPDATE

ZIllahmonster starts chemo tomorrow, or is it today ? its late here.

we were told that it would be expensive as all hell, but it could give him 16 to 18 months !! he is about at the end of his "normal lifespan" for a dog his breed and size ( huge hence the monster nic. ) anyway.

i just could not go the route of making him comfortable for 2 to 4 month knowing that would be it.
couldnt make the decision to KNOW when he would go.

i wish i could be there with him, but i cant, so the unemployed GF is taking him. she starts her new job soon, so i figured i would have to take off here and there to take him later.

anyway, the fight starts tomorrow, and he is going to beat this and live and die a happy old dog !!

thanks to everyone who said kind words, and thanks a ton for all of the PM' s !

it means a lot to me.

thank you all. really.
Peace, Love.

i'm really sorry to hear that. it's amazing how close we can get to our pets, and its always tough when things get like this.

maybe its time for you to take a sick day, shouldn't be worrying about this at work.

    :(

I am sorry to hear that. When my cat had cancer I opted to have him at home for a bit and then I took him to have him "put to sleep". I couldn't watch him suffer and for me it didn't seem like chemo was a fair option to him...just my two cents. take care,

I don't have much to say ... but, I wish for the best ...

know that, vets can be wrong about life expectancies in these situations.

my girlfriend's sister's Shih Tzu, age 9, suffered a seizure and it took a week or so for the pooch to snap out of it ... the doctors were suggesting that she'd have issues, might not make it past 6 weeks, and we should consider putting her down.

Over a year later, she's more playful now than she was before the seizue!

I'm so sorry- i know how this feels-
Jakey about this time last year was also given just a few weeks to live when we took him in for what we thought was an abcessed tooth but was a tumor they couldn't fully remove.
I just have to say just love him up and make him comfy as possible and enjoy your time- you will always have him with you as I have my Jakey

I'm really, really sorry. The above poster is right, take the day off from work if possible. Losing a pet is impossibly hard, hang in there.

Agreed. We're thinking of you, and take your time in handling this. I'm so sorry to hear of your dogs illness, although because you are obviously a very loving owner, I'm sure you'll make the right decision.

    Be well.

thank you so much to everyone. it really means a lot.

i should say, that the tough choices here to make is not putting him down.
its just at his age, not so sure he will handle chemo well. i dont want to keep him around for another year if his life sucks for 6 months of that.
they told us that even without chemo he will last 2 to 4 months and be in very little pain.

i just dont want to put him through anything for ME. any decision i make, i want it to be for HIM.

after talks with the GF , and going over what we have been told , its a week by week thing right now.

if he is stong enough for the chemo and it wont reduce his quality of life , im going for it, no matter the cost.
i cant say "just make him cozy till the end". 4 to 5 thousand is well worth him being around another year to me.

thanks everyone. i mean it. from the bottom ya' know?
    Peace, Love.

Good luck with what ever decision you make. The hardest time for any pet owner.

Love the pic of him in your avatar. Although those grey hairs are a signal that their getting on they look so awesome with them. I remember when my last Dog got them he looked like such a wise old man.

Give him his favourite dinner tonight for me ;)

I'm sorry about Zillah, I just responded to your other thread and now I understand. I've been there. My thoughts will be with you.

i'm so terribly sorry to hear this...
my dog is my best friend and i broke down yesterday when my mom threatened to give her away (at which point, if she ever did behind my back,i would most definitely never talk to her again.)

i dont wanna think about the day she has to go but of course we'll almost all go thru it.
hopefully you can look back on the great times instead of the sadder days ahead... that is a really hard decision to make for you, i can't express how bad i feel for you, i'm so sorry :(

i think a few months of living nicely before going might outweigh suffering for a year if that is inevitable.
it is definitely not an easy choice.

    sorry again,
    be strong :]

This sucks. No matter what decision you make, its gonna be a tough one. You want him around as long as possible and you dont want him in pain. HOW THE HELL DO YOU CHOOSE??!! :( On a positive note in true "SENROCK! STYLE".....i will say that alot can happen in 3-4 months and even a year. Do what you gotta do and believe in miracles!!! i'm sorry i missed this when it was originally posted...late to the thread but just wanted to send some good thoughts and wish zillah all the best. my cat had cancer 3 years ago, had to put her down eventually since treatment would have only extended her life by a couple of months because of the type of cancer, and would have been too painful for her.

pets are so important in one's life, the love they give makes it worth fighting for them. i wish you luck and good thoughts thru all this, take care! :)
