WBCN off the air - No Pearl Jam

Boston is having a rough month first no Pearl Jam this year now this

http://thephoenix.com/BLOGS/dontquoteme ... -wbcn.aspx
WBCN-FM, a/k/a the "Rock of Boston," has as storied a history as any Boston radio station. But come August, 'BCN will no longer be a part of Boston's radio landscape. As reported on Phoenix affiliate WFNX this morning. CBS, 'BCN's owner, is moving Mix 98.5 to 104.1, WBCN's frequency, and starting a new, all-sports station--apparently to be dubbed the Sports Hub, and to carry the call letters WBZ-FM--at Mix's spot on the dial. Word is that 'BCN's morning team of Toucher and Rich will do the Sports Hub's morning show when the change is implemented in mid-August, just in time for the Patriots' preseason. (WBCN will, apparently, survive as an Internet station. Any 'BCN listeners excited about that?)

This is good news for WFNX, which competes with WBCN for listeners craving alt-rock fare. But it's bad news--or at least depressing news--for Boston radio as a whole. In its earlier years, 'BCN was known, among other things, for unusually varied programming; for championing talented acts that were still in their infancy, but went on to become superstars; and for showcasing major talents like Charles Laquidara and "News Dissector" Danny Schechter. Of course, the cerebral stylings of Laquidera, Schecter et al. have long since yielded to (among other things) Howard Stern, the execrable Opie & Anthony, and Patriots play-by-play.

So: one less option for rock fans, and one more entry in Boston's already crowded sports media marketplace. I'm told that WEEI.com's Michael Felger and Comcast SportsNet's Gary Tanguay will be doing afternoon shows on the Sports Hub when the station's up and running. Those are nice gets--and as the Sports Hub competes with powerhouse WEEI-AM, it'll need all the talent it can get.

WTF?!?! The absolute LAST thing this city needs is more sports talk radio. And at the cost of losing WBCN?

    Again...WTF?!??!??!?!?!

more proof that radio as we know it is on life support at best.

  • when I lived in Beantown in 99-00 I always enjoyed WBCN.... This is horrible news but reflective of the radio industry..... Be glad you don't live in a radio market that is entirely owned by Cheap Channel where all they care is about is advertising revenue so you just get a shitload of comercials and no damn music...

This has been rumored for a while, was hoping it wouldn't happen. But 'BCN hasn't been the same for a long time anyway, they used to be a trendsetter, but over the past 15 years became a corporate sheep like most radio stations. Still not happy to see them go.

WFNX is the place to turn ... and cling on that mutherfucker like there's no tomorrow, because if and when that goes ... there will really be no reason to own a radio in Boston.

Are they moving the Patriots broadcasts to WZLX?

Yeah, while it is insane to see WBCN go -- there is barely any music on in the afternoons. 92.9 plays the same stuff with no talk and minimal commercials.

  • Yea, 'BCN sucks now. I was born in 1980, and they really were a place to go for cutting edge and underground music, plus entertaining DJs. Nocturnal Emissions (with Oedipus), Charles Lacquedera, all that was great. The station started to suck right around the time of DJ Nick Carter and Limp Bizkit. I wish I could say that I'd miss them, but I haven't listened in years. Good riddance to programming that was frequently bland or just abrasive...

There's tons of great music out there. College stations, Pandora, you name it...it's there for the listening, if you're willing to search it out. But Opis & Anthony, Fallout Boy, all that nonsense? Fuck 'em...

When I was 10 or 11, I met Charles Laquedera in my home town, he was filming a commercial for local cable.

I spoke with the assistant, and asked if I could get an autograph.

He started signing something and I interrupted him as, he spelled me name wrong.

He started a new one and I actually said "Um, can you actually make it out to me dad, he loves you."

Then after staring at me for a few seconds (I had no idea why) ... he signed a peice of paper, gave it to me and said "I'm sure your dad will appreciate this ...

Anyone ever listen to the Sublime box set? There's an awesome interview that Bradley did on BCN in Boston, plus a couple of in-studio performances... I think they covered Minor Threat for one of them... pretty sad to see a rock station with significant legacy go under.

WAAF was awesome back in the 80s and early 90s, but then in the mid 90s they started to suck. (as did much of the new music) And while they still hold down the metal fort of Boston radio, they are rehashed. I agree with everyone's hillman statements...he needs to go. BCN, while jockeying for the 'alternative' crowd, lost me by trying too hard to be all things to Gen X. Quite simply, by the time they switched to alternative, BCN looked like a joke. I agree this in its entirety is bad for boston radio.
I love to turn you on

FNX is good, but a tad too college radio-esque.
WHJY in Providence is probably the best thing left for an all around rock radio station.
