WBCN off the air - No Pearl Jam
Boston is having a rough month first no Pearl Jam this year now this

WBCN-FM, a/k/a the "Rock of Boston," has as storied a history as any Boston radio station. But come August, 'BCN will no longer be a part of Boston's radio landscape. As reported on Phoenix affiliate WFNX this morning. CBS, 'BCN's owner, is moving Mix 98.5 to 104.1, WBCN's frequency, and starting a new, all-sports station--apparently to be dubbed the Sports Hub, and to carry the call letters WBZ-FM--at Mix's spot on the dial. Word is that 'BCN's morning team of Toucher and Rich will do the Sports Hub's morning show when the change is implemented in mid-August, just in time for the Patriots' preseason. (WBCN will, apparently, survive as an Internet station. Any 'BCN listeners excited about that?)
This is good news for WFNX, which competes with WBCN for listeners craving alt-rock fare. But it's bad news--or at least depressing news--for Boston radio as a whole. In its earlier years, 'BCN was known, among other things, for unusually varied programming; for championing talented acts that were still in their infancy, but went on to become superstars; and for showcasing major talents like Charles Laquidara and "News Dissector" Danny Schechter. Of course, the cerebral stylings of Laquidera, Schecter et al. have long since yielded to (among other things) Howard Stern, the execrable Opie & Anthony, and Patriots play-by-play.
So: one less option for rock fans, and one more entry in Boston's already crowded sports media marketplace. I'm told that WEEI.com's Michael Felger and Comcast SportsNet's Gary Tanguay will be doing afternoon shows on the Sports Hub when the station's up and running. Those are nice gets--and as the Sports Hub competes with powerhouse WEEI-AM, it'll need all the talent it can get.

"...I changed by not changing at all..."
I was listening to BCN for YEARS ... even when they were more classic rock (before they moved the classic rock guys donw to 101.1 or so)
more proof that radio as we know it is on life support at best.

Just thinking about WAAF makes my skin crawl.........
Are they moving the Patriots broadcasts to WZLX?

same here
92.9 on the weekends is nice... no commercials... lots of PJ... and a Hunger Strike every now and then
Yeah, while it is insane to see WBCN go -- there is barely any music on in the afternoons. 92.9 plays the same stuff with no talk and minimal commercials.

There's tons of great music out there. College stations, Pandora, you name it...it's there for the listening, if you're willing to search it out. But Opis & Anthony, Fallout Boy, all that nonsense? Fuck 'em...
When I was 10 or 11, I met Charles Laquedera in my home town, he was filming a commercial for local cable.
I spoke with the assistant, and asked if I could get an autograph.
He started signing something and I interrupted him as, he spelled me name wrong.
He started a new one and I actually said "Um, can you actually make it out to me dad, he loves you."
Then after staring at me for a few seconds (I had no idea why) ... he signed a peice of paper, gave it to me and said "I'm sure your dad will appreciate this ...
(Duane was his "alter ego" on the radio)
I laughed ... then when I got outside, I realized why he was staring at me ......... I was wearing a WAAF t-shirt.
My dad still ahs the paper framed in his home office.

Pats games and now Bruins are going to this new 98.5. And you're damn right about FNX, a great station that hopefully can stick around.

Thats pretty funny.
Do you remember Duane Ingalls Glasscock's dog's name?
WHJY in Providence is probably the best thing left for an all around rock radio station.
