the no b-side trend continues...
so i notice that the bside to the fixer is got some.
i don't care about the small tours that fuck the south.
i don't care that a pair of tickets now used to be two pairs of tickets and a year of 10c membership in 03.
i don't mind that its about the same price to see ed ad to see the whole band.
i don't care that the site is terrible during on sales, that the singles are late, that deep comes sporadically.
what does peeve me tho, is that from riot act to avocado was three years and avocado to backspacer was 3 years, and all we're gonna get is 11 songs.
i'm fine with an 11 song album too, btw, so no complaints there.
i just wish the bsides would come back. i was expecting them to with the return of brendan o'brien for some reason.
i think maybe this is the result of the digital age. other bands like radiohead didn't put out bsides with their last album, but then again wilco did, so i don't know. maybe when a band expects the album to be all over the internet before its released, they don't see a need to give fans a hold over. deathcab for cutie, did however release an ep of leftovers, because they wanted them out there.
i remember falling in love with bsides, feeling like i was getting a bonus for buying a single of an album track.
i don't see why i should get a seven inch of two songs off an 11 song album. sure vinyl sounds better, but the album is being offered on vinly.
sorry if this was long winded, but i'd love to get a discussion going with people offering their insight why there is no bsides, or if other people maybe don't care.
so, what say you?
i'm not trying to sound like everyone else, but

I think the need to release singles is not as great as it once was. I remember in the 90's how Sam Goody would have an entire section devoted to singles. Now I doubt any record store would have a section like that. I dont think people buy singles anymore. Just like I dont think people buy physical albums anymore. As I have said before. If you are a teen girl, saving up your allowance, and you want to go get a new cd, I dont think you run to the local cd store. I think you download it off kazaa, or your burn a copy that your friend already has, that undoubtedly they have burned. Teens arent hungry for singles. I think the new singles, are people buying one or two or three songs off their favorite artists new cd's on the iTunes store. People buy the one or two "singles" "radio friendly songs" and just move on.
So I dont think the customer demand is there. And I think artists are alot smarter than record company CEO's. They know, no artist gets any decent profit from cd sales. Thats just a fact.
WHich surprises me about the Pearl Jam Backspacer offering. Yes the Ten Club or store bought physical versions of the new cd will be alot more interesting and what not than downloading the music, but who really buys cd's anymore? I think Pearl jam should have gone the digital route this album, offered it digitally, and thrown in, maybe some extra songs or something.
The debate over filesharing vs buying physical cd's always seems to get lost in the idea of right vs wrong, ethical or unethical, fair or unfair. Whats lost is the idea that reguardless of YOUR opinion on the issue, filesharing is the primary means most people obtain music, and is here to stay. I think you either adapt and grow with that knowledge as an artist, or you hang up the guitar and retire
