Is your actual weight number an issue?

I was at the doctor's yesterday, about to get weighed, and the nurse stopped me to ask if i wanted to take off my shoes and my sweater. she said that most people want to bring the number down as much as possible---even though no one is going to see it besides the doctor.

it got me thinking about if people really do stress much about the actual weight number, as opposed to how you look and feel....so, do you guys find that?

  • I do believe people do and it's a shame. The number can also be quite deceiving as most people just generalize a number and don't account for height.

I know when I tell people how much I weigh they react in a kind of shocked way. Then it takes a few moments and they forget, oh yeah I'm towering over them with my height so I just have more mass. I sometimes get a kick out of the comments of "My lord dude, you're a fatass." As if the number means more than what you physically see...

It's just sad that people will focus on a number rather than finding what's healthiest for their build. But yes I do notice some people will stress over the number more than anything else.

I haven't weighed myself in a year and a half... Infact when I moved I left the scale at the house. I go by my belt... :)

in many cases, if you feel bad, you potentially look bad, and create bad habits. i'd have to say yes for an increasing number of people.

    that said,

there are many success stories, especially on this board, which prove that when lowering one's weight to a healthy number, everyone feels and looks better. and i'm sure there are a few fellas out there in the pit who are working on this in order to sweep some of you Philly girls off your feet in October!!! ;)

I really don't weigh myself often. I kind of go by how my clothes fit and how I look. I usually freak myself out when i weigh myself
These cuts are leaving creases. Trace the scars to fit the pieces, to tell the story, you don't need to say a word.

yeah...it's just interesting that a number should correlate to feeling better when it's LOOKING better that should make someone feel better. I mean, my "number" has been roughly the same for the past 10 years, but my body looks a lot different than it used to, so the number means nothing.

however--I guess as long as one feels good about him/herself, that's the most important thing in the long run. I was just surprised that the nurse made it seem like that extra 1/2 lb was going to make a huge difference.

I learned a while back that the actual number doesn't tell you that much. I weigh much more than I look like I do. My doctor actually commented on it last time I was there. He wanted to have the nurse weigh me again until I told him that really was my weight. The size of my clothes is a much bigger issue to me than the number on the scale. I have to admit, I do focus a lot on what size I am.
