I love the groove he does at 1:35 but I'm terrible at snare rolls. I really don't have much of a clue how hes doing that. Is this this a hard snare roll? I'm not new to drumming at all but I hardly ever practice snare rolls.

I'd recommend picking up the book Stick Control and to immediately start working out of it. When you say "hardly ever practice snare rolls", I can't help but imagine that you mean you don't practice rudiments. Eventually, you'll hit some walls in areas of your drumming. Rudiments are very important for building technique and control of the sticks. It took me way too long to understand that.

Damn, I can't believe that solo was over four minutes, it went by quick.

Did you get the sound fixed on your snare? If so, what did it?

Speaking of rudiments, is it normal that paradiddles are so damn difficult for me? I started taking drum lessons about 6 months ago and I also own stick control. That said, even after what seems like months of practicing my paradiddles, I am still slow at them. I keep hearing to practice all of my rudiments, and I do. It's just that I am wanting to overcome my challenge of being so slow at paradiddles, so I find myself almost practicing them exclusively.

Does it take a while for one to get pretty confident/fast with them at first?

I would recommend practicing paradiddles slowly, and gradually over weeks your muscle-memory will grow and you'll be able to do them faster over time. Just start out at a pace that you know you can do them well at, and get faster over month or so. I never found myself using paradiddles when playing with bands.

Just start slow and work your way up. Some rudiments are harder than others. This varies from person-person. They probably are much faster than when you first started, but still slower than your others because it's the one that you have the most trouble with. It's okay if your rudiments aren't all at the same speed. The main thing is that they all get better and that you don't leave any behind.

  • I've been playing for 26 and the other poster is right. Just keep playing your paradiddles over and over and your hands will just start doing it. Then you can move on to paradiddle-diddles and get them so fast it's like an open roll. Then just throw in some flam drags and swiss triplets and you can blow people's minds.
