I have a buddy that is a garbage man.

He too finds all kinds of neat stuff!

I'm also surprised to this day to hear that he gets a TON of tips during Christmas!

Never even considered tipping the garbage man....

He makes good money too. When I was in college he was making bank and I was a poor college student trying to get into med school. That pissed me off!

    Oooooh well!

People have that idea that's it's a horrible job, but I know from my friend that it's really not that bad at all...and you can make a pretty damn good living doing it.

I make it a point each year to tip my GMen atleast 10 bucks. If some the neighbors did the same they would have a pretty nice Christmas.

yeah they tried that around here but it didn't work out. There is to much stuff and we also offer a Bulk Day once a month(4x's a month) to different sections in town. Its a day set aside so people can clean out basements, toss out furniture etc..

Yeah we gets tips as well at Christmas and at random times during the year. Not everyone tips us and we also get a lot of beer from people. I work the same area all the time so I get to know some of the people and what they will be tossing out and we take almost everything. The only things we won't take are like tires, asbestos and crap like that so people appreciate us getting rid of the stuff for them and they won't have to pay someone to come haul it away.

I should note that we are Hand pickup. Meaning I ride the back step of the truck, hop off and pick up the cans(not sure what your buddy does). Yesterday I did 15 tons of trash so I was a tad tired last night. I have had knee and foot surgery so far. Most guys I work with have had knee, shoulder, elbows and a few wrists done, its a good job and a hell of a workout and it tears your body up.

My friend works in the suburbs of Chicago so he has to deal with the -10 degree temperatures and the foot of snow too.
Not sure what would be worse...

My dad was an elevator repair man in San Francisco for over 20 years. You would not believe the stuff he found in elevator shafts. We're talking that little space between the elevator and the wall. I could never imagine how most of it made it down to begin with.

He was so honest, he never kept anything. He always gave it to the management of the building, even in the 70's, when he found a HUGE paper grocery bag (remember those?) full to the very very top of greenstamps (anyone remember those?) My mom never forgave him.

He found no fewer than 5 diamond rings that I remember, wallets, purses, walkmans (that was back in the day!)

What I could never figure: who drops their wallet or purse down an elevator shaft and doesn't go to management do find it? It's not like you don't know where you dropped it...

Wow! I never even considered the many treasures you would find being a garbage man. How cool... I'm sure there is a lot of crap to deal with being one, but finding neat stuff like that probably balances it out.

My husband actually is very interested in becoming a garbage man. How difficult is it to get that type of job? Just out of curiosity...

I live in a Co-op with twenty two other people. We dumpster dive quite a lot of our food. We get all of our bread for free from a local bakery. Often times the bread is weeks away from expiring and usually cost about 4-5 dollars a loaf. But we get it for free. Same with Bagels. All the food we get is sealed in plastic bags and touches non of the other garbage in the dumpster. If you can get over it it's a great way to get some really good food for cheap.

    people are crazy...
my mom is an ESL teacher and said that a few years ago some home stay students, when they left to go back to Asia, threw out things they bought here... skis, stereos, you name it... all nearly new. What's it to them? they are rich and can just buy new ones....

all the teachers took the stuff out of the garbage and kept them hahah!

Yeah... I could never do that (unless actually broke and starving of course)... I'm all for finding cool things (electronics, furniture, etc) thrown out on the curb, but I'm not eating anything out of a dumpster (sealed or not).

Not sure what you guys have there but I work for my Town. I applied there and got hired like 7 months after I dropped off my application. For private companies I would think that you would need to just go in and apply, he may need a CDL liscense though(I am required to have a Class A with an AirBrake endorsment).
