I think its time PJ recorded their opus. Something on the scale of The Wall; long, thought-out, and with good replayability. Although I honestly can't fathm what kind of concept they'd use.
Thanks EPOTTSIII!

I like the idea, but I dunno if it would be good enough for us, if ya know what I mean? Could be the greatest opera in rock history but we'd find things to criticize, but for Pearl Jam to truly hold their rightful place in the pantheon of rock, they would need to do this

i agree. people would bitch about something.
i for one would love a double disc concept album. considering ed's love for quad. you would think he would at least want to attempt this.
here is to hoping for a concept album.
Peace, Love.

It seems that, judging from interviews, that this album will be a more "typical" process and end product, with the band laying down instrumental foundations, and then Eddie coming and adding melodies and lyrics. Im sure Eddie has some completed songs already in the can, as he is clearly on a creative peak at this point, but I am anticipating a more straight ahead vibe ala avocado or vs. or ten.
i know i am in the minority when i say this, but hear me out: i am not ready for another album just quite yet. as much as i love the excitement, anticipation, and of course touring that comes with a new album i feel that releasing an album in the next 6 months wont be there best work. think about it. ed has been busy with his soundtrack and tour, matt just released his new jazz cd, jeffs album dropping tuesday, etc. obviously the guys have been extremely busy lately. i, for one, feel their "master" work is something that needs ample time to be brainstormed, drafted, refined, tweaked, and perfected. if it was announced tomorrow that we wont see a new PJ album until fall of 'o9 or even earlier '1o i would be extremely frustrated, but more confident in the final product

The band has worked best in tight deadlines. All the best albums, from Ten to Riot Act were written and recorded in blocks of 2 or 3 months at the very most, between major tours. The longest album was Avocado which in all writing and studio time took about two years and it's definitely the worst effort yet. I think the band need to be putting immediate ideas down , in the studio in a creative enviroment. Just look at ITW. Ed said he wrote and recorded most of that in a few days and its the best collection of songs from any member of the band in a long while, since Binaural effectively.
I have no idea what they'll be doing this time, but at some point they probably should try setting some kind of story or long idea with a group of songs.
I'd like more of a combined effort. I just get the feeling that Avocado each member added their thoughts one at a time and they didn't really work together a lot.
it doesnt matter what they do it will be liked and disliked by people on this board I just hope it is coming out in 09 and is an improvement on avocado which I still liked but overall it doesnt compare to their other stuff

INDEED!!!!!! but on the other hand you can't really say a rushed effort will be great either. Let the force guide the albums progress, no?????

Well not really, it seems like Avocado was just too thought out. I feel possibly there was a lot of potential in the songs, but they didn't record them immediately and hence lost that quality that is there on the other albums that i really like which is an almost improvised feeling to the music at times, a looser, jammier feeling with some spur of the moment harmonies and overdubs. Avocado is very stiff and stale IMO.
The freshness that i get every time i listen to Vs. through to Riot Act i think is because the songs WERE fresh when they were recorded, Avocado feels like the songs were boring the band when they recorded them. Therefore they bore me when I listen to them.
Hopefully with B O'B back that will change for the next album, as he apparently likes to work fast to keep things raw and experimental.

I think Avocado was a great album. All their albums are great and I really, really like Avocado as well. There is nothing at all wrong with that album. Each album is different in it's own way and I love them all.
Ed is obviously the key songwriter in the group. IMHO Ed's best work in the past 10 or so years has been for movies: Man of the Hour and the majority of Into the Wild. Also, despite it being a tad "overplayed" for most of us diehards, WWS would/should be the consensus critics pick for the best PJ song of the last two albums. I hope I am not stretching here but it seems like Ed writes his best stuff these days when he is somewhat forced to write directly on a topic or concept (Big Fish, ITW, Dubya etc).
So....
Definitely since Binaural, and most likely since No Code, PJ has pretty much made straight ahead rock and roll albums. Might it not be a bad idea for the upcoming "Brendan O'Brien" record to be a concept album?
#1 It might pull PJ out of the straight ahead, Who style rock that has dominated the past three or four albums. Nothing wrong with this kind of music, it is actually my favorite genre, but I always though PJ/Ed would migrate to more indie/experimental territory, when in fact they have done the exact opposite. Now a concept album doesn't necessarily mean an experiment album but a touch of "weird" might do this band a good thing. During this past solo tour I got the feeling EV was about fed up with his frat boy audience. Well, nothing can rid PJ of this crowd better than a good old fashion concept album
#2 I think a concept album would most likely be "Ed's concept" and thus leading to more EV songs and hopefully better EV songs, like we have been treated to on Ed's soundtrack work.

Discuss if you please.
NOOO!!! THEY CAN'T CHANGE THE GENRE! at the VERY least...not comletly!!! They are already perfect!
The whole idea of "concept" being applied to albums seems a bit silly to me. Doesn't every song that a musician writes have a "concept" behind it? Therefore, any album could be considered a "concept" album. I get what the term is used for...I'm just saying, that when you really consider what music is and where it comes from, the term "concept" album is nonsense to me.
