I'm new to KOL ( I just bought Only by the Night a week ago), and I have been playing this record non stop since then.

What do you guys think their best album is, and why?

Like any bands first album, it was how they started out sounding and how they'd rehearsed sounding for eons before the record company got hold of them. I also prefer it's rawer Southern edge.
Been to this many PJ shows: Reading 2006 London 2007 Manchester & London 2009 Dublin, Belfast, London, Nijmegen & Berlin 2010 Manchester 1 & Manchester 2 2012...

... and I still think Drive-By Truckers are better.

same here, and i like it all. i love how raw their first records were, but b/c of the times is flat-out amazing in my opinion. everything from the opening riff of "McFearless" to the groove of "My Party". good tuneage. 8-)
    I LOVE MUSIC.

youth and young manhood (Amazing album)
    AHA shake heartbreak
    Only by the night
Because of the times (not a bad album, just didn't like it like the other 3, especially the first two). Only songs, I could really get into on this one were: Knocked up, on call, Mcfearless, 17, the runner and that was it.

If you really like Only by the Night, you'll probably love Because of the Times as well. Both are excellent albums.

The first two are very good as well, but very different. I personally prefer the latter two albums... so go get Because of the Times now!

aha shake, loses some of the edge that makes youth and young manhood so great, but adds so much more in variety, the rhythms and overall song writing. Absolutely different band then who made Only By the Night though.

Youth and Young Manhood because it has the most catchy songs. The new album is great but unfotunately after seeing them live in April, I can see those songs seem to have a big arena kind of sound where their first album sounds like it could be played in a small club.

quick question for those who have seen Kings as of late, like this tour or last year.
Are they playing songs from all their albums like mixing it up nicely or are they just focusing mainly on the last two albums because that's what the general population would know and respond best too?

I have not seen KOL live yet, but love their stuff. Hoping to catch them in October, but I'm waiting on PJ's tour schedule first.

I saw them in Boston in April and they mixed it up quite well. They played about half of the new album and the rest of the gig was mixed up pretty good.

    My Favorites:

Because of the Times - A dark groovy record. Also some fun moments as well. Stand out tracks are - Knocked Up, Arizona, True Love Way

Aha Shake Heartbreak - Catchy, Riffy, Perfect party or driving album. Best cuts - Slow Night, So Long , Milk, Soft, & Four Kicks
    NERDS!

Mixed up well, but the majority of it is newer. Usually the older tracks played are California Waiting, Molly's Chambers, Taper Jean Girl, Slow Night, King of the Rodeo, The Bucket & Taper Jean Girl.

My favorite is Youth and Young Manhood by a long shot. I listened to that album constantly when it first came out and I still go back to it frequently. While I think all of their albums are solid, that one will always be my favorite. I saw them back in 2005 at a small local club (Ziggy's in Winston-Salem) and they were amazing. They were good this year in Charlotte as well but I was disappointed that they only played 1 song off their debut (Molly's Chambers).
I wish I was as fortunate, as fortunate as me.

Count me as someone who loves all their albums. However, Aha and Because of the Times rank a little higher than the other two. Agree with the poster who said you should run to get Because of the Times if your a big fan of the new album. Only By The Night feels like an extension of what they got started on Because of the Times -- but BOTT is stronger IMO.
