electric guitar, played with a local musician on acoustic (for get his name) and also Boom on keyboards. This version had a little jam session in the middle. Hawaii '78 and Hard Sun comprised the 2nd encore. Also, the Bruce song was Bobby Jean, and the Don Wilson song was Till The Rivers Run Dry. And Ed said that Can't Keep was the second song he wrote on the ukulele, following Soon Forget which was the first.
Not Makana, but he did play at the fundraiser

The debut of Can't Keep was a couple of solo performances in 2002 a good half a year before Riot Act was released, one at the Wiltern Theatre in LA, and the other at the All Tomorrow's Parties (or something like that) festival at UCLA. Those were also the first time he played Broken Hearted, You're True, and some of the other uke songs - at least as far as I'm aware...

was she the one Eddie was talking about? very sad to hear.
For me, the day and the show was all about Joni-lee, I feel sick about what ad appened to her and being left behind in Maui. Many thoughts and wishes her way, I hope she recovers thoroughly very soon.

I'm so sorry to hear about joni lee. :( Best wishes for a speedy recovery!!!
And oh yeah, the show...
- Easily one of the best concert experiences of my lifetime. Ed was very relaxed, in a great mood and sounded amazing. He was conversational but not rambling, clear, drinking a beer but not buzzed or hungover. I can't recall any lyric/chord fuckups or restarts. And, the Hawaii Theatre is a really beautiful venue with rich acoustics. I thought the crowd was great, very reverential with few shouters. Ed briefly made fun of a couple of people that yelled things but overall it was a perfect vibe. At one point he even told the crowd, sarcastically, "Hey, mellow out everybody," or something to that effect. The singalong moments were kind of tame and I got the impression that us uber-hardcore PJ fans were a bit outnumbered by (enthusiastic and polite) casual fans.
- Boom hung out and chatted with a couple of fans outside before the show. A friend said he also saw Jack Johnson hanging around but Ed didn't mention him.
- Early on Ed asked to turn the lights up so he could "see who I'm talking to", then made a joke about having sex with the lights on. After the joke a look of realization came over him; Ed hung his head and put his hand over his face in embarrassment. He said he just told that joke in front of his 5-year-old daughter who was seeing her first Into The Wild show. It was a sweet, genuine moment. Also early on Ed mentioned Joni-Lee by name, saying he heard about her accident on Maui and that she was in our thoughts, and that he was glad she was going to be ok.
- Ed brought Liam out for Society, Throw your Arms Around Me and Til The Rivers All Run Dry, then had Eliza join him on Golden State (and Forever Young? Can't remember). Liam's harmonizing on Society added a beautiful element to the song. The ITW songs sounded especially poignant to me for some reason, and I recall Ed mentioning "Chris" as one of the friends who couldn't be with us, and it was clear that was Chris McCandless. Jon Krakauer, Sean Penn and Ed have added a great deal of meaning to Chris's life, well after it was over, and I have to think that this part of the story arc has helped his family come to a kind of closure that would have been impossible otherwise.
- Can't Keep was the highlight for me, because it has been a current favorite of mine for awhile now and it was so unexpected. Ed's strumming was so great on that song. Arc, christ it gave me chills. Ed was barely silouetted on an unlit stage, his dark figure hunched over as he added soaring vocals layer by layer, and adding a bit of the high-pitched "Wolf" howls at the end. Ed walked forward and bowed as the loop continued, waving to the cheering audience, quite a few of whom beat it to the exits. This enabled me to upgrade myself from 13th row center to 3rd row center for Hawaii '78 and Hard Sun, which is a pretty amazing song when you're that close.
Ok, time for lunch, swim in the ocean, nap on the Hawaiian sand, then another preparty and show tonight! Can't wait.
