I'm just thinking that it has to happen sometime in the near future, so now is just as good as any other time. That being said, there is still a force of 130,000+ US Troops there if violence flairs up.

I didn't read the article yet, but if there are still 130k troops there, that's hardly leaving. I was getting my hopes up from the title of the thread too...
This is great news...great news, indeed...baby steps are good sometimes...
Yep, better than nothing.
Hopefully it'll at least keep our soldiers away from the car bombs, IEDs, suicide bombers, or whatever else they'd encounter while patrolling the cities.
Not to say they are "safe" now, just hopefully safe-er.
I think this is a BIG step in the right direction. Unfortunately, I don't think we'll be leaving Afghanistan for a much longer time. The vacuum will be certainly filled by the Taliban, and everyone knows this. But then the question is, if it will be, then why stay forever when it's inevitable?
I don't know exactly what to think about this. I'm a bit confused - with all of the celebrating going on yesterday by the Iraqi people. I just know that over of 4,000 of our brave men and women lost their lives in the process of exposing the Iraqi's to "freedom" and a "Democratic Society." We can't force-feed either of these things where it may not be wanted. I'm not judging either way. I don't always "verbalize" my thoughts and feelings very well - so I'll stop. BTW -My husband is still there...and I miss him.

I wonder how many Iraq veterans will end up like the Vietnam veterans? I.e, Either dead by suicide, or homeless? Once the flag waving stops they'll probably all sink into the gutter like the previous 'heroes who fought to defend America from evil doers'.
lets start bringing them home to their families. it needs to be done responsibly, but this is a good first step. of course chances are things will go to hell and they will be right back in the cities for another few years, but god i hope not.

Removal from the bases is scheduled for 2011. Here's hoping it goes better than Saigon.
