Seattleites, your advice if you please!

I am going to Seattle later this summer (yay!). I have booked accommodation downtown for the first half of my stay but they didn't have room for the last few days, so I need to go elsewhere. I have visited twice before but this time I will be on my own which makes things a bit different, and I have been trying to decide where would be the best area to base myself. Really, I wanted a bit of variety - but I also want to be safe and and not have too far to go to reach good places and then get 'home' again at night. I wondered about Capitol Hill as I loved it round there before, but as I said, it's different this time and I have to think a bit more about the logistics!

Any thoughts/advice from those in the know would be greatly appreciated!

will you be renting a car? if you are - you may want to get out of downtown so you don't have to pay as much for parking and then you can go pretty much where you like. if you're here for beyond a week during the summer you might want to check out the mountains (west - olympics & rainforest; east - cascades, gorge & wineries; south - mt rainier; north - mt baker, etc.) or one of the many other beautiful places. San Juan Islands are always a treat too...

yeah...rent a car and go to the Olympic Peninsula for a few days....or to the Cascades. Summertime in the PNW is all about getting outside. it is gorgeous here in the summer.

I'm only stayng for a week (that may well change but I can't be sure at the mo) so that's why I wanted to base myself in the best possible location to make the most of it on foot/bus. I realise I won't be making the most of the whole gorgeous area by staying put but...renting a car and driving round a big, unfamiliar city, by myself, on the "wrong" side of the road? Terrifying!

well then, i would say to base yourself downtown...more central to everything.
since you wont have a car...some other things you could do...

take the water taxi over to west seattle and then take the free shuttle down to Alki Beach...gorgeous sunsets and lots of restaurants...Duke's Chowder House has a great happy hour and upstairs deck with a great view.

take a day tour to Mt Rainier. i have taken this one before--- 10 hours of beautiful scenery: http://www.seattlecitytours.com/rainier.html

take the seattle ferry over to bainbridge island and back. 30 minutes each way and the total cost is $6.70...the best deal for getting out on the sound.
