Bashir was admittedly a little duplicitous in his approach to Jackson: seemingly deferential to him in person then going away and shaping his argument against the way the man was living. However, if he'd been more confrontational in his approach to Jackson, he'd never have managed to get the exclusive access he needed, to show how weird things were in Neverland at the time. Bashir was to an extent arguably underhand in "setting up" Jacko, but ultimately I think he was acting as an investigative journalist would if he needed the scoop.
It's not as if Bashir lied about Jackson. He just interviewed him and found out he was sleeping in the same bed as a young boy. His representation of Jackson was pretty plausible.
The prosecution that followed might well have happened anyway, whether you believe Jacko was a paedophile or whether you think that boy's family were milking him for what they could get. Bashir was just doing his job, and I don't think he was out to further his career: he must have long anticipated the backlash he'd receive from the Jackson machine, once the programme was aired. Shit, didn't Maury Povich host an "alternative" version of the Bashir documentary using the footage from Jacko's own cameras, demonstrating Bashir "fawning over" Jacko? This backfired on Jackson if anything, because Bashir seemed sincere in his appreciation of the man's talents. Okay, he was after his main story but they'd have had a bigger case against Bashir's integrity if he'd come into his house and accused him flat out of being a nonce.
