I'll play for 20 minutes and the damn head gets all wrinkled. I just replaced the lugs that were stripped from when I used to tune the snare extremely tight, now it just doesnt stay tuned.

Anyone know of a good snare for $200-$300 that has a nice LOUD and FAT sound? I'm not a big fan of ringy tight snares.

Go on ebay/craigslist and pick up a vintage ludwig acrolite. It's an amazing snare and you can find one in great condition for under $200.

Probably, but I change my heads so infrequently.

I bought new heads recently for my toms and snare, and one of the toms I put just a little too high, but when I try to get it a little lower it just sounds like hitting a pillow - and that's with me tuning just a tiny bit lower. Maybe it has to do with the pitch of the bottom head, but I think it has to do with stretching it out. I was always bad at tuning.... but try a new head. $12 may save you a lot of aggravation. I didn't think my snare was THAT out of whack, but when I took off the old head, it was super wrinkled from all the hits. :D
