i'm gonna try americanframe too... but i think i remember reading somewhere that you don't put in the exact dimensions of the print when you're putting in the print sizes for matting.. is that true? do you have to add or subtract a fraction of an inch or something? does anyone know? or do you just give the exact print size

Yes. You will want some of the poster to be behind the mat. When I did some prints last year I did 1/4 of an inch. I used American Frame last year to do three posters and was very happy. Just make sure you measure correctly since they are custom cutting your mats.

keep in mind the 1/4" mentioned above is not universal for all posters... measure the space you want exposed through the matte opening... different things will look better for different posters... just a little bit off from the print field would work well

I, for one, think your advice is great. Please keep it up. The framing discussion threads are almost always my favorite for some reason...

as for the big box stores and their 50% off sales...I'm guessing that the estimate you get during the sale and not during the sale are close to the same number...is that correct?

you would think that would be the case since the sales are so regular... but when they say 50% thats actually what they mean... its always just a waiting game when you want a poster framed and the sales not going on... the glass is always the same price though i think... and sometimes the matte sales dont coincide with the custom frame sales... so thats a bitch

its been awhile since getting a frame done at hobby lobby so im hazy on the pricing details... im hoping to get my santa barbara '03 framed sometime soon though so i can update this if i have a horror story or stumble across new helpful info

i would be very interested in seeing an estimate given during a sale, and one given outside the sale dates...def. post info when you have it.

I am framing the Santa Barbara '06 (Ames).

I don't have that poster, but I checked out the "jet black" sample, and it looks like a nice, clean black mat... no way you'd be disappointed it in it. Should look very nice. Buy w/ confidence!

I'm very confused by this too. When inputting my print information on American Frame, under the "Enter Art Size" menu, it seems like it is asking for the exact size of the print. So, for the SB poster, I entered:

    Width: 20 1/6
    Height: 25 15/16

Those are the exact dimensions of the poster.

On the next page, it asks for "Mat Overlap". I put in the standard 1/8". Below the "Mat Overlap" box, it then lists the "Mat Board Opening Size" as: Width 19 13/16, Height 25 11/16.

So then, the page automatically adjusted the "Mat Board Opening Size" to 1/4" less than the actual poster size all the way around.

Does that mean, then, that the page is automatically adjusting for some of the poster to be behind the mat? Or does that mean I need to put the 19 13/16 and 25 11/16 as the sizes for my print on the first page? Or something different?

Sorry, I feel like such a novice, I'm just not sure what "Mat Board Opening Size" means and exactly this whole sizing thing works. Again, as always, I will be very grateful for any advice.

By the way, CJMST3K, haven't had the chance to thank you yet. I have read a number of your framing-advice posts (in this thread and others) and they are always very intelligent, clear, and HELPFUL.

I don't know why anyone would even imply that you are giving advice with the intent of lining your pockets...by contrast, it seems like you are simply someone in the know who enjoys helping others. I appreciate that.

    Thank you.

DYI or professional really depends on the how much you value what you are getting framed.

I get my PJ posters done professionally because I value them personally AND they go up in monetary value as well.

I frame other less valuable things myself.

    Anybody help out with this?

And -- finally -- what do you order off americanframe.com to get the poster hung? Just hanging wire, or the hanging hardware kit?

    Thank you!

I have always had success by entering in the exact poster size and using an overlap of 1/4". I think w/ the Santa Barbara '06, enough of the poster is white that the difference between 1/8" and 1/4" isn't going to make any real difference...I think either way you go will be fine, but make sure and enter the poster's actual size when asked.

Make a note of the size you entered, and then when you get the mat, you can make measurements and see how much overlap they actually gave you. That will help you make these decisions in the future...I think the Santa Barbara is a good one to be your first...there's so much white space, and it's a relatively simple poster, that your chances of messing up in some way are pretty small...

    hope that helps!

I think you can get hanging wire from them for mad cheap...like .50 for a roll that will handle several frames. It will be tough for me to answer this question, because I don't use their materials to do this...

I live in the DC area and there's a place here called Framer's Workroom (http://www.framersworkroomdc.com) that allows you to frame things yourself in their workroom. For a $5 table fee they will let you use all their materials, like tape, the hanging wire, etc. and teach you how to frame things. It's really great, especially in combination w/ American Frame...I usually buy the frame, mats, and backing board from American Frame, then buy the glass from Framer's Workroom, and put it together there. As a matter of fact, I'm framing 3 things there tomorrow and will post pics when I'm done.

Long story short - I haven't ever used any of American Frame's hanging supplies, so I guess I can't really help there...hahaha :D

A huge thanks once again! My order has officially been submitted (along with the complete set of sample mat colors, as you suggested), so now I just have to wait for everything to arrive. I did enter the exact print size and used the 1/4" overlap so I will see how it goes.

Once again, thank you, your advice has been invaluable!

For $25, American Frame will give you a sample of all the Crescent Select mats...if you are going to be doing additional framing beyond this one, I recommend doing that, as you can get the exact color you are looking for without any question...

I will definitely be ordering the samples...great tip. I didn't even see those on the site until you mentioned them.

I don't see the link for ordering all the samples... Any help?
