Is Stephen Colbert really a conservative?

Yes, I know Stephen Colbert the fictional character is a republican, but is Stephen Colbert, the real person, a republican as well?

It seems it could go both ways, because while he plays a republican, he also completely eviscerated and totally annihilated Bush and Rove and everyone at that White House Dinner a few years back. For whatever reason, Bush is able to sleep at night, and the protests never really seemed to faze him, as opposed to a Nixon or especially LBJ who were almost driven to madness via the insane vietnam protests at that time. But whats odd is Colbert completely gave it to Bush at that dinner. He ridiculed him and made fun of him, cut his ideas and "facts" to shreds, in a way I havent seen ANYONE else do, in the years of the Afghan and Iraq wars.

So is he a democrat? Or a Republican? Or neither? Maybe a libertarian? Maybe even a green?

maybe he intentionally made it this way, but probably for the rest of his life, people are gonna be wondering if he is joking around or is really giving his true opinions on issues. How do we know anything he says in ANY interview is him talking and not his "character"?

from what i recall he is a pretty liberal guy. there was a profile of him and jon stewart in rolling stone a year or two ago and it talked about it in that article. his character is over the top conservative and completely makes fun of hannity and rush and all of those guys. i don't think a conservative would do that, they tend to stick together.

think he's pretty liberal. I remember reading that he was accepting an award for the show and during his acceptance speech he talked about how "Stephen" was a troubled person with alot of issues and so on. Basically saying he was one fucked up individual.

Who knows for sure? I do know that he is a pretty devout Catholic though, and he tends to joke about them quite a bit on his show.

    Personal life
Colbert with his sons at the Tribeca Film Festival

Although by his own account he was not particularly political before joining the cast of The Daily Show, Colbert is a self-described Democrat.[70][71] In an interview at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard Institute of Politics, he stated that he has "no problems with Republicans, just Republican policies."[72] He is also a practicing Roman Catholic,[12] as well as a Sunday school teacher.[73][74][75]

Under his fictional persona in The Colbert Report, Colbert dropped hints of a potential presidential run throughout 2007, with speculation intensifying following the release of his book, I Am America (And So Can You!), which he claimed was widely rumored to be a sign that he was indeed testing the waters for a future bid for the White House. On October 16, 2007, he announced his candidacy on his show, stating his intention to run both on the Republican and Democratic platforms, but only as a "favorite son" in his native South Carolina.[58] He later abandoned plans to run as a Republican due to the $35,000 fee required to file for the South Carolina primary,[59] however he continued to seek a place on the Democratic ballot and on October 28, 2007, campaigned in the South Carolina state capital of Columbia, where he was presented with the key to the city by Mayor Bob Coble.[60]

After announcing his presidential ticket, he asked his viewers to cast their votes by donating to DonorsChoose.org, a online charity connecting individuals to classrooms in need.[61] Colbert's promotion inspired $68,000 in donations to South Carolina classrooms, which benefited over 14,000 low-income students.[62] Colbert teamed up with DonorsChoose.org again in 2008 by asking supporters of Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton to do the same. As a lead-up to the Pennsylvania primary, he created a "straw poll that makes a difference," where people could donate to Pennsylvania classroom projects in honor of their favorite candidate.[63] Colbert viewers donated $185,000 to projects reaching 43,000 students in Pennsylvania public schools.[64]

On November 1, 2007, the South Carolina Democratic Party executive council voted 13–3 to refuse Colbert's application onto the ballot. “The general sense of the council was that he wasn't a serious candidate and that was why he wasn't selected to be on the ballot," stated John Werner, the party's director. In addition, he was declared "not viable,"[65] as he was only running in one state.[66] Several days later he announced that he was dropping out of the race, saying that he did not wish to put the country through an agonizing Supreme Court battle.[67] CNN has reported that Obama supporters pressured the South Carolina Democratic Executive Council to keep Colbert off the ballot. One anonymous member of the council told CNN that former State Superintendent of Education Inez Tenenbaum had placed pressure on them to refuse Colbert's application despite his steady rise in polls.[68]

Though Colbert's real-life presidential campaign has ended, current Marvel Comics editor-in-chief Joe Quesada established in an interview on The Colbert Report that Colbert's campaign is still going strong in the fictional Marvel Universe, citing the cover art of a then-recent issue of The Amazing Spider-Man which featured a Colbert campaign billboard in the background. Background appearances of Colbert campaign ads continue to appear in Marvel Comics publications, as recently as August 2008's Secret Invasion #5 (which also features a cameo of an alien Skrull posing as Colbert). In October 2008, Colbert made an extended 8-page appearance webslinging with Spider-Man in The Amazing Spider-Man issue #573.[69]

Actually, if you ever go to the taping of his show, they make a very clear and bold commentary about how Colbert is just playing a fictional charater on tv and the views of the show do not represent Colbert's own. Most people don't realize it, but about 40-50% of his viewing audience don't realize he's acting and playing a character - which says a lot about our society.

I think it's pretty obvious he's a Democrat. His show is based on making fun of shows like the O'Reilly Factor and their politics.

His original plan was to run for both parties at the same time, but I believe that the Republican's wouldn't allow him on the ballot for their primary. I thought the democrats weren't going to allow him either but I could be mistaken.

According to the wikipedia articla i posted it was too expensive to run as a republican and the Obama supporters tried to get Colbert taken off the ballot (which doesn't surprise me, i was in SC until after the election and i remember seeing Obama stickers placed on top of every other candidates stickers, even if they were still in the running....1 day it would e a Clinton, Paul....sticker there then the next it would have an Obama sticker on top of it), but yeah, he intended to run on both parties platform but the article also says he considers himself a democrat.

Although he's a very funny comedian - Steven Colbert is a mockery of the definition of being Conservative. And if you all actually get your news from him - as well as John Stewart - then you are all dumber than what I originally thought. Stop gaming and try watching some actual news sometime.

I'd say those two are more spot on than say Fox or MSNBC. It's like a funny spin on a legit news source like the BBC.

Then I have to respond by saying that you never watch the actual NEWS much. Apples and Oranges. I don't care for "spin." They all do it though. I despise E-Entertainment. Too much of our society is focused on what the Hollywood Elite do. They suck.

I'm partial to C-Span, although thats not really news. It's pretty cool to watch the committees. I mostly watch the financial happenings.
