Besides...There's probably nothing in this world more eye gougingly boring than being subjected to conversation between 3 musicians talking about their instruments.
99.9% of the time it just ends up being just one big pretentious circle jerk.
Let me guess...These 3 guys really respect each other
like it or not U2 is a really popular band (in case you haven't noticed :P) and i thought it was really cool to see the different kinds of guitarists out there, each from different periods of time in music with different ways to look at playing guitar. i think in the movie he understands he's not the best guitarist and he didn't come off as someone who thought he was all that great and even made fun of himself.
i actually thought the movie was pretty good and i now have more respect for jack white. it was interesting to see three different people with different takes on rock music and how to play it. i loved how even though they grew up during 3 different periods of music (whether it was skiffle, punk rock, or hip hop) the power of the love of music and the guitar brought united them. i also loved learning little tidbits about jimmy page's and jack white's and the edge's lives. all i have to say is, please see this with an open mind, it'll be more fun that way and i didn't get the pretentiousness, i thought it was more about 3 guys telling stories about how they discovered the guitar in their own way and how much they love music and how their bands came to be.
i really do recommend it, but i do hope people don't watch it expecting this and that, it'll be more fun if you go into it with an open mind without any preconceptions of what you think it's going to be like
Well said. I don't understand all the hate for The Edge. I'm not a huge U2 fan, but I like them ok and think he has made some great sounds come out of his guitar.
I'm really looking forward to it, because I thought it sounded exactly like how you described it was (ie not that it would be a big jerk off session, but that you would learn cool things about what drew them to music and behind the scenes stuff.)
The Douche is as pompous a fuckstick as there is. He's very aware that he's one of the greatest guitarists ever, even though he's not.
Maybe he tones it back for this movie, but he's sittin in a circle with Jimmy f'in Page. What's he gonna do?
Also, who would allow people calling them something like The Edge?
the story goes that he's called the edge because of his face and how angular it is. bono is called bono because of a store called bono vox on a street, his full nickname is "bono vox of o'connell street" but it's shortened to bono.
i didn't get any doucheyness from the edge in the movie and he actually made fun of some riff he made up. he understands that his unique sound is all echoes and stuff and he's not a great guitarist by any means.
all they did in the circle was talk about their favorite songs and they tried to learn how to play some songs. the movie also shows each of them in their hometown where their bands first began, their first practice spaces, first gigs etc. so the whole movie isn't just them in a circle, it's them by themselves talking about music, what influenced them, their favorite songs and why they love it, their own music, and the decade they grew up with and how they dealt with the good and bad music (like jimmy page with skiffle and jack white with hip hop). they also show old and new footage of each band (it's so cute to see James Page as a little boy )
as i said before, it'd be a better experience for those who want to watch the movie to go in there without any preconceived notions about it and without this whole "i hate u2/the edge so i'm gonna immediately put down anything he does and take everything he says as complete crap!" it's definitely worth checking out
and just because i love u2 doesn't mean i'm a sheep or anything and i will say that there is a clip in the movie of u2 performing back in the 80s and bono looks quite heartbreaking (in a bad way) in his 80s cliche look and his unrefined.... uh... dance? moves :P

I don't think it'll ruin the movie or anything for me. He's in a huge rock band that tours the world and that is interesting enough in itself. I don't let ego's take my appreciation for the music.
I'm definitely not hatin U2's tunage. They obviously make lotsa people very happy and I like a fair amount of it too.
It's mostly just his personality, and I hadn't seen the movie to know if his eminent douche baggery shines through. It's great that it doesn't.

I've watched that trailer more times than I've watched ANY movie, ever.
Jimmy and Jack......2 of my favorites. Hopefully "The Douche" doesn't ruin it

How Shocking!!!
I'll probably end up watching it anyways...

there's seven more minutes of footage here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7cEoH1OVY6I
w/ a french translator but still totally watchable, for me at least.
i don't know much about the edge, but he seems like a nice guy from what i've seen.
Stick any U2 affiliation infront of the media and you'll end up with glowing reviews.
"U2, one cup" would probably get amazing reviews as well.
