anti smoking bill

included in the bill says that the FDA plans to reduce the amount of nicotine in cigarettes..
but if they do this, and you're not trying to quit, wouldn't that just make you smoke more cigarettes in order to get enough of a nicotine fix?
so i guess my question is, do you need a certain amount of nicotine to curb your craving or will any amount of nicotine work?

i do believe, in time, you do crave X amount of nicotine as a long-term smoker. you grow accustomed to a set fix, and therefore more than likely would smoke more cigs. that said tho, for NEW users....and there are always new users....they would be getting less nicotine, so i would think this is a good thing.
i am unfamiliar with this smoking bill....what else does it encompass?
i don't really have a vested interest as now a non-smoker 5+ years and now enjoy non-smoking environments and avoid second-hand smoke like the plague.....but i am always curious about smoking-related legislation.

People are going to hoard the higher nicotine cigarettes, hell, even sell them on ebay ... and you thought people selling posters were nuts? Wait and see how much people start spending on cartons of cigs ...

you really think so?
i mean, sure...you'd have to smoke more cigs to get the same amount of nicotine. so what? you'd go and smoke more.....or maybe not. thing is, if what you're saying is true....what would honestly be the motivation to pay even more for cigs just for the higher nicotine? unless it actually worked out to be cheaper....no one would do so, they'd simply smoke more. people already spend an insane amount of $$$ on cartons of cigs, i personally don't think many would go out of their way to spend even more to get higher nicotine. also, cigs do have a shelf-life before they get stale....so that factors in as well. as with raising prices on cigs in general, which is a proven, correlated method to getting people to decide to quit....i think this might be a similar idea. whether it 'helps' or not, only time will tell.....

i had to think for a moment on that one.....should've said coca-cola....;)
well that sounds like crazy collectors...not crazy addicts looking for their nic fix. :P

If they can manipulate HIGHER nicotine levels into smokes...why can't they make it lower? I guess they can...
I am a month into non-smoking...but even from the pov of a recovering addict; I still have issues with this kind of thing - working toward prohibition seems redundant imo.
this explains oh so much.......;)
i kid my friend, congrats!
and the insider was a great flick all-round, but truly an eye opener too....tho we already 'knew' all the information by that point, none the less...having it dramatically depicted helped.
i have to say tho...i fail to see 'redundancy' in this? while i am not saying i in any way support absolute prohibition, tho i am a big supporter of smoking bans in public spaces....i guess i am not seeing how it is redundant to work towards prohibition, if indeed that is what you think is happening........

either im lucky or everyone else is a weenie.
i smoked for 8 years. near the end when i was a welder i was smoking 2 packs a day. marlboro reds and 305's..manly shit.
then i tried to play basketball and i almost died. so i quit. and i never felt a chemical freakout.
i didnt crave nicotine. i craved the motion. i had a routine. my car rides to work were down to a science where i put it out right when i got to the front door.
anyways i still dont smoke still.
just venting
i know i am pointing out the obvious...but you do know everyone's body chemistry, and predisposition to addiction, is vastly different? whille many may have vastly similar reactions, there are always many others who do not. thus why one person can use heroin once and move on....and another tries it once and is hooked horrifically for life. tis the same for nicotine, or any other chemical/addictive issue.

im usually quite sensitive to peoples differences..but im holdin firm that if you want to quit. you can. its not heroin
who said otherwise?
you said nicotine was/is a crock....that was all i was disputing.
i HAVE quit....5.5 years ago, and i agree...if i can quit, just about anyone can. you have to truyl WANT it tho, b/c for some of us...it was a bitch and half to go thru. and it has been compared that nicotine has just as strong addictive properties as heroin. none the less.....i wasn't trying, nor desiring, to get into a debvate over it. merely pointing out that your personal experience, while absolutely valid and true, for you...is just that....your....personal....experience. therefore, it does not 'prove' anything outside your personal experience.

was just sayin
hehe...oh i like to get into it, i just have to be in the mood...right time, right subject.
anyhoo.....i apparently have not been paying attention as of late, b/c i really know nothing about this anti-smoking bill...so if the OP or anyone esle cares to illuminate me, much appreciated. yes, i am just too lazy to bother looking it up. i'm not that interested i guess......:P

You're right. Medically speaking, nicotine is far more addictive than heroin.
The physical craving passes relatively quickly though, but that psychological addiction takes forever. I have never quite been able to get rid of my desire for a smoke in certain situations. I don't do it, but it's still there.
i'd make recommendations, but it's early in the day....and an all ages forum.
seriously, kudos and good luck with it! you can do it!
