My driver's side front CV boot needs to be replaced in the near future according to my mechanic.
I NEED to go to New York from DC this week, would it be wise to drive up and back? How long can I wait before it has to be replaced?
Thanks

get it fixed before the trip...you don't know how long the CV joint was exposed to dirt and grim....Depending on make and model, it's a quick job as more that likely your mechanic will replace with a rebuilt axle shaft...if your CV Joint goes, your wheel can come off while your driving...
If you can do the work yourself, the boot itself will only cost a few bucks...
My mechanic gave me a quote of $285 with labor and I know the boots are only 30-50$ so I'd rather do it myself.
I'm guessing you did not have the car checked out by a mechanic prior to purchase...anyway, I'm a bit confused by your response. You say you have no clue how to repair the car and that you plan to do the work yourself...
I've changed a CV boot, and it's no picnic...do you have the tools, a jack, jack stands...? I'd be willing to bet you'll need some special tools to complete this task on the Audi....
$285 sounds reasonable for this task...you could always check with another mechanic for a price...
I got the car checked out and I was told that it needed a new oil pan and a boot, which wasn't a big deal. I got the car for only 3 grand so it was a steal.
I don't plan to do the work myself but i'd rather spend only $40 then $300, but I thought it was an easy task so if not I'd rather not, haha.
3 grand for a 95...? I hope it has low miles...he's a write-up...it's not hard if you have all the tools...

If you know someone that has the tools, the knowledge, and is willing to help, I would say do that...you'll learn something as well. Other than that, $285 for parts & labor? I don't think that's too bad...
I don't know if it would save you any money or anything but you could always buy the parts, and bring them to the shop and have the mechanic use them...unless he has some policy that doesn't allow that, which would be a little strange.
Anyways, good luck man. It's too bad we've become too dependent on cars, because maintaining them can be a bitch.
