Transforming Squier into Monterey Strat

So this is the project I've decided to tackle this summer. Taking my old black squier and transforming it to resemble Hendrix's Monterey Strat.
My brother is an artist an professional graphic designer, so he's going to take care of the artwork, but what is the best way to remove the old finish and paint from my current squier? Just a lot of sanding?
And if anyone has any experience doing these kind of things and tips or advice would be greatly appreciated, such as type of laquer to use and such. Thanks.
