In an unprecedented scientific endeavor — and what may be one of the coolest space missions ever — NASA is preparing to fly a rocket booster into the moon, triggering a six-mile-high explosion that scientists hope will confirm the presence of water.
The four-month mission of the Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite (LCROSS), which will be directed from NASA’s Ames Research Center at Moffett Field, is to discover whether water is frozen in the perpetual darkness of craters near the moon’s south pole. As a potential source of oxygen for life support and hydrogen for rocket fuel, that water would be a tremendous boost to NASA’s plans to restart human exploration of the moon.

A lot cheaper and easier to practice on the moon.
my exact thoughts when reading this story.

Scientist 2: I don't know...
Scientist 1: Should we bomb the shit out of it?
Scientist 2: SURE!
and why is it that the americans feel like they can just bomb the shit out of the moon? shouldnt they consult wiht other countries first? i mean, its not like its one of their territo...oh wait, they have a flag there. nevermind...
The JPL seems to always be in the news...

Why is this important? Why is anything nasa does important??? What the hell do we need to know if there is life on mars for? what do we need to know ifthere is water on the moon? Do we plan on migrating to the moon anytime soon? We should be worrying about how to fix earth not worry about some stupid planet or moon billions of miles away.

NASA's budget is 1/2 of 1 percent of federal spending. Compared to an unnecessary occupation costing over a trillion dollars, I'd say they are doing pretty good with what they are given.
By studying the past, we can help shape the future. Additionally, NASA's role in the earth sciences are huge. TERRA, AQUA, GPM, TRMM, GOES, and POES are just a few of the NASA missions that are directly responsible for learning more about our planet and giving us direction as to how to fix it.
Depending on who you listen to, there may or may not be a need to fix things here at home. When George W. Bush couldn't ignore climate change anymore, he had the NASA mission statement updated to remove any mention of protecting or understanding our home planet. So technically, Earth sciences are now outside of NASA's scope.
Weather forecasts are important.

Honestly, they're not. Sure, its nice having a warning for the bigger storms but leave the rest. It's never right anyway.
