NASA plans 6 mile high explosion on the moon

In an unprecedented scientific endeavor — and what may be one of the coolest space missions ever — NASA is preparing to fly a rocket booster into the moon, triggering a six-mile-high explosion that scientists hope will confirm the presence of water.

The four-month mission of the Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite (LCROSS), which will be directed from NASA’s Ames Research Center at Moffett Field, is to discover whether water is frozen in the perpetual darkness of craters near the moon’s south pole. As a potential source of oxygen for life support and hydrogen for rocket fuel, that water would be a tremendous boost to NASA’s plans to restart human exploration of the moon.

A lot cheaper and easier to practice on the moon.

Glad I'm not the only one put off by the idea. Is there no better way to search for ice than to create a massive fucking explosion? How could the earth be affected by unforeseen results? And how much oxygen and rocket fuel are they planning to discover by finding frozen puddles that can't be found otherwise? weird.

Scientist 1: Do you think there is water on the moon?
    Scientist 2: I don't know...
Scientist 1: Should we bomb the shit out of it?
    Scientist 2: SURE!

You do realize that major endeavours like this usually lead to technological advancements that we end up using in our everyday lives? Who cares who is paying for it?

  • well i was told that the "explosion" wont actually be a firey explosion, but rather a huge chunk of metal being flung at the moon...dont see how that could help, but sure, why not.

and why is it that the americans feel like they can just bomb the shit out of the moon? shouldnt they consult wiht other countries first? i mean, its not like its one of their territo...oh wait, they have a flag there. nevermind...

gosh, I can't believe it's being directed by Ames Research Center (nasa) and not the Jet Propulsion Lab.
The JPL seems to always be in the news...

Am I being ignorant or is NASA the biggest waste of money our government can possibly do.

Why is this important? Why is anything nasa does important??? What the hell do we need to know if there is life on mars for? what do we need to know ifthere is water on the moon? Do we plan on migrating to the moon anytime soon? We should be worrying about how to fix earth not worry about some stupid planet or moon billions of miles away.

There is a lot to be learned from this. During the Apollo missions, after the astronauts returned to the orbiter, the lunar modules were deliberately crashed into the surface of the moon. Knowing the size, weight, and speed of an object when it crashes can tell you a whole lot.
Am I being ignorant or is NASA the biggest waste of money our government can possibly do.

NASA's budget is 1/2 of 1 percent of federal spending. Compared to an unnecessary occupation costing over a trillion dollars, I'd say they are doing pretty good with what they are given.
Why is this important? Why is anything nasa does important??? What the hell do we need to know if there is life on mars for? what do we need to know ifthere is water on the moon? By studying the past, we can help shape the future. Additionally, NASA's role in the earth sciences are huge. TERRA, AQUA, GPM, TRMM, GOES, and POES are just a few of the NASA missions that are directly responsible for learning more about our planet and giving us direction as to how to fix it.

Depending on who you listen to, there may or may not be a need to fix things here at home. When George W. Bush couldn't ignore climate change anymore, he had the NASA mission statement updated to remove any mention of protecting or understanding our home planet. So technically, Earth sciences are now outside of NASA's scope.

Honestly, they're not. Sure, its nice having a warning for the bigger storms but leave the rest. It's never right anyway.
