Critics Attack ABC News for Refusing to Air Opposing Ads During Obama's Health Care Special

Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele accused ABC News and anchor Charles Gibson of making President Obama's case for "nationalized" health care "without any opportunity for opposing views to be aired, as a new study shows ABC offers widely favorable coverage of the president's plan.

Can this bias be any worse.

It is their airtime, they can sell it to whoever they want to. All they will have to do is turn on FNC to get the opposition views to the health plan. It''s times like these when I remember all of the anti-tax cut and anti-war commercials I saw Fox selling their airtime to.

So the right wants the fairness doctrine back now? I get so confused...

Sure they can sell their airtime to whoever wants it. I have a feeling though it’s going to be a fluff piece. I hope I am wrong but I have a strong feeling that is what’s going to happen.

Doing away with the equal time laws and fairness doctrines in broadcasting was a near-sighted and dumb-ass move....ABC still broadcasts over public airwaves, for them to take a side in any fight is against the long term good of the public as a whole. The cable networks don't broadcast over public airwaves, thus they are free to be boneheads whenever they desire.

No debate about the good or bad of the public should be carried out in a public forum with one side gagged.

I wasn't aware that they've done away with equal time laws or the fairness doctrine. I think it still applies ... though how it applies is murky.

It applies during campaigns, one candidate over the other. Does it apply to issues like this?

thats a good question.. I don't know if it does or not. We should have different view points on this topic and I feel ABC should allow it. It is a pretty big issue for people to only see one side because the general public won't bother to look at the other side of the issue unless its right infront of them(and then maybe).

Shocking! Get me the smelling salts!!!! A news channel in bed with a politician? Well, I never! Can anyone say "business as usual," and Faux News and the entire GOP? Not whores to any one person, Fox. Send the money, and they put out.

Are people getting younger around here, or what?
  • Hm. What was the name of the liberal guy on Fox News (psst.. that's a trick question)

The Right has one channel (Fox) and the left has every other channel on the dial, yet everytime media bias is brought up all the Liberals can do is cry and point out Fox. It's the one channel they haven't taken over so they cry about it every chance they get.

It should come as no surprise to anyone that the media is in bed with Obama. They have been since day one, hell they're the main reason he got elected!

If a Republican ever got to air a program on one of the major networks and blocked any Democratic viewpoints from being aired before, during, and after, every left wing person in the country would be kicking and screaming. If Bush had pulled this stunt Pelosi would have used it to start an impeachment proceeding.

But then again, Bush wasn't the chosen messiah that 'ol Obama is  .

While I won't disagree on what side the media is on, going with the belief that they are the main reason that Obama got elected will ensure that the GOP never makes a comeback. After 8 years of Bush, a bad republican candidate, and McCain's straight talk express getting sidetracked by picking a trainwreck as a VP, the dems could have just about run anyone and won.

While the press does lean left a little, they usually go with the best "story", or just try to be on the winning side (like the Iraq war buildup, the media was HUGE Bush admin cheerleaders). This time around, Obama was going to win, and was the best story, so the media came aboard.

Fox News pushes the agenda of a group of people that lie to us and rob us blind.
MSNBC, CNN, ABC pushes the agenda of a group of people that lie to us and rob us blind.

I don't see where bias even matters.

While it's true that Fox is the only major broadcast network that leans to the right, News Corp (the Rupert Murdoch owned media conglomerate that Fox is part of) has much more pull than any other media company in the world. As of 2007 News Corp had a 16% share of the global media market (just for comparison's sake- that is more than CBS TV, Time Warner, Citadel and Clear Channel put together).
Murdoch's reach goes far beyond TV into radio, print, film and with the recent purchase of myspace, even into cyberspace.
I think we should all be very careful about who we receive our news from, and we need to do our own independent research to help us form our opinions. We live in an age where everyone has an agenda, and we can't rely on the media outlets to always be unbiased. Whether it's Fox or ABC or anyone else, we have to take in as much as we can, and try to find the truth ourselves, otherwise we are going to get duped.

a survey by editor & publisher during Bush's first term showed that while more anchors may be liberal the overwhelming majority of owners and editors were conservative

    i can't remember i read it years ago,do a search

they also found in 2000 newspaper publishers favored Bush by 3 to 1 and newspaper editors and publishers combined favored Bush 2 to 1

and in 99 they found the 4 top ranked syndicated columnists in the US leaned right or far right and of the top 14 who appeared in at least 250 dailies 9 were conservative, 3 were liberal and 2 centrist
