I'm a Built To Spill fan for sure... Funny b/c right now they're playing on my Pandora stream.
Doug Martsch is pretty much turns anything he touches to gold... his solo record was great and his earlier band Treepeople was pretty fucking good too.
Favorite Built to Spill album is 'There's Nothing Wrong with Love' but that's probably a really obvious choice... I really liked You in reverse too.
Great set today ... although seeing Doug up on the stage with his guitar sitting there for about a half hour before the set, just, sitting there all by himself ... for THIRTY MINUTES ... was pretty odd.
Here's a pic ...
Damn mfc, if I knew you were there, I would of said hi. I got up to about 2nd row for BTS as no one was there ... so, I'm sure I saw a lot of PJ folks.
But, I had to go watch the National on a different stage ... and man, that was SO fucking worth it. I still managed to scramble back to ~15th row Mike's side for PJ.

oh---i wasn't there! i was here in TX watching the feed on YouTube! they were great, though & i've that performance made me order 2 of their albums. that is strange that he just sat there...
i love built to spill!! i finally saw them for the first time this year at capitol hill block party...it was awesome to hear car and goin' against your mind live they're back in seattle on my bday in november...i think that's what i'll be doing!!
So like a week later, I just can't get this band outta my head!!! Just blew me away at Outside Lands, trying to piece together the 9-10 songs they played....
In no particular order: Traces, The Plan, Car, Stab, Conventional Wisdom, and the one that's really stuck in my head, "You Were Right" -- awesome lyrics, riffin' off so many songs, so fun! Traces and The Plan were also favs of mine. Been scouring iTunes trying to piece it back together - one new song as well.
Wow! That was HIM!?!? Duh, didn't really connect that while watchin the set-up. Huh, kinda watched the "roadie" gettin all set up and thinking, "man that's a pretty trippy roadie...." As I wrote in my OLF review though, wow -- absolutely ZERO stage presence. I wonder if it's just huge festival/sunny day "deer in headlights" effect (not that I think the festival phased them at all, there was just no chemistry really between the dudes, and Doug just kinda stayed glued to the mic up front and never moved ... kinda a dour dude?) Not that they were even close to the ice between The Police on that last tour (man, 3 dudes that could care less if each other were on stage...) If that's the "adverse side effects" for Doug's kinda medicine, I'm fine with that, not everyone should be Mick Jaggar.
Their forum and website are pretty thin so I just decided to post back here -- bummed that was THE STOP in the Bay Area on their tour, was checking their dates to see if I could catch them again. Can't imagine what a full show of theirs would be like. While I won't knock Sonic Youth, KoL, or, hehehe, BEN HARPER as an opener, man, BTS would be an awesome opener for the 2010 tour!
As I was watchin the triple guitar attack, it just seemed to me perfect -- Doug takin leads with the dude on Mike's side, and the dude waaaay over on Stone's side just in some reverb/delay sonic soaring distortion fest.
The bass was a little punchy, maybe take it outta the side fills a little? (That was fun, Doug spent about a minute between the 2nd 3rd songs getting the monitor mix ... just right.)
Awesome -- THAT right there made OLF worth it to me, finding a "new" band like this!
Living in Seattle, you get the option of seeing them about 6 times a year...amazing band, Velvet Waltz is one of my favorite songs of all time.
You should also check out Caustic Resin, that was the band that their third guitarist Brett Netson was in, sounds like Bon Scott joining a psychadelic group. They parted ways in 2003 and thats when Netson joined BTS.
Yeah, iTunes led me to Caustic Resin, thanks -- nice 20 min Cortez the Killer collab!
From what I can piece together, the OLF Set List was: Traces; The Plan; Stab; Else; Conventional Wisdom; Car; You Were Right; ::new song::
and then I think they played 2 more after the new tune but I was off to another stage still just numb from the first 8 songs -- I think Conventional Wisdom clocked in around the 10 minute mark!
Do bootlegs exist? The studio stuff sounds ::nice:: but I'm ever so much the live sound fan.
