WASHINGTON, June 14 (Reuters) - CIA director Leon Panetta says it's almost as if former vice president Dick Cheney would like to see another attack on the United States to prove he is right in criticizing President Barack Obama for abandoning the "harsh interrogation" of terrorism suspects.

"I think he smells some blood in the water on the national security issue," Panetta said in an interview published in The New Yorker magazine's June 22 issue.

"It's almost, a little bit, gallows politics. When you read behind it, it's almost as if he's wishing that this country would be attacked again, in order to make his point."

Cheney, who was a key advocate in the Bush administration of controversial interrogation methods such as waterboarding, has become as a leading Republican critic of Obama's ban on harsh interrogations and his plan to shut the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

In a blistering May 21 speech, Cheney said Obama's reversal of Bush-era policies were "unwise in the extreme" that would make the American people less safe.

Panetta called Cheney's actions "dangerous politics."

He told The New Yorker he had favored the creation of an independent truth commission to look into the detainee polices of former President George W. Bush. But the idea died in April when Obama decided such a panel could be seen as politically vindictive. (Reporting by David Morgan; Editing by Alan Elsner)

    NOTHING surprises me about Cheney.

The man has a summer home on Mount Misery in eastern Maryland not far from Rumsfeld. BTW it was the former place where slaves were taken to be punished for being disobedient, plotting to escape or captured. Many were beaten and faced far more harsh conditions than on the southern plantations.

So what.. I lived on a civil war battle ground. The battle of Secessionville. Does that make me a racist or a bad person?

I don't really care for Cheney either, but where he lives???? What does that have to do with anything ??

Why get bent out of shape, I only stated where the man has a summer home and what that place represented at one time just like you did. Take for it's historical purposes. I don't believe you're a racist just maybe a person who doesn't like history. :)

If they put their homes up for sale you should be the first to put a bid in to buy it. :)

Wrong sir... I love History. If It's not a big deal then why did you even post it ? What about Where obama used to live in Chicago? Does that mean he likes the Mafia? Maybe you should do some background work where you live . No telling what you might find out. after all isn't that what's so great about history ? You never Know until you start to dig.

I did say MAYBE right. I posted it because I do live in the same state where he has his summer home and I've been over to the eastern shore many times. On visits playing college basketball and because of it's historical values of how the eastern shores was such fertile grounds for it's agriculture during slavery.

Irony: Like if a member of the Ku Klux Klan decided to carve the heads of four U.S Presidents on a rocky outcrop in the middle of the Lakota Sioux's most sacred mountain. He he! Can you just imagine it?

this opinion doesn't invoke fear in anyone for any reason so i don't see the fearmongering ... i just think this is obama trying to offset cheney's pr war on this administration ...

Yep, that's exactly what it is...also setting it up so if the US is attacked Obama can still blame Cheney...since he wanted it to happen.

It's all stupid BS. I also think it is extremely irresponsible of anyone to claim someone (even Dick Cheney) WANTS the US to be attacked and people killed. It's beyond stupid, it's insulting and childish.

Maybe Obama WANTS the US to be attacked so he can change into "Yes We Can" Man, cape and all, save the day and mark his place in the History books....again.

I think Obama wants us to be attacked again so he can go on another apology tour. "We're sorry our buildings killed your hijackers."[/ducking]

Project for the New American Century

'Section V of Rebuilding America's Defenses, entitled "Creating Tomorrow's Dominant Force", includes the sentence: "Further, the process of transformation, even if it brings revolutionary change, is likely to be a long one, absent some catastrophic and catalyzing event––like a new Pearl Harbor" (51).[13]

In his appearance on Democracy Now!, theologian David Ray Griffin, author of The New Pearl Harbor: Disturbing Questions about the Bush Administration and 9/11, explains the allusion to "the New Pearl Harbor" from the PNAC report in the title of his book, which argues that PNAC members within the Bush Administration were complicit in the 9/11 terrorist attacks.[37]

Further information: 9/11 truth movement and Controlled demolition hypothesis for the collapse of the World Trade Center
Though not arguing that Bush administration PNAC members were complicit in those attacks, other social critics such as commentator Manuel Valenzuela and journalist Mark Danner,[38][39][40] investigative journalist John Pilger, in The New Statesman,[41] and former editor of The San Francisco Chronicle Bernard Weiner, in CounterPunch,[42] all argue that PNAC members used the events as the "Pearl Harbor" that they needed––that is, as an "opportunity" to "capitalize on" (in Pilger's words), in order to enact long-desired plans.[43]

"When the Towers came down," William Rivers Pitt writes in his editorial in Truthout.org, "these men saw, at long last, their chance to turn their White Papers into substantive policy."[

I think a few politicians also feathered their own nests with the off-shoot of over 1 million dead Iraqis.

Your argument is easily and more convincingly applied to Cheney. He's setting it up so that if there is an attack, all of his horrific abuses and disastrous foreign policy decisions get a free pass... he can say it was Obama's fault and it vindicates everything his admin did. What he is doing is far more irresponsible than anything that CIA leader said... he is basically out there saying all over the country to the entire world that we're plenty vulnerable, go ahead and take a shot.

I've never seen less dignified behavior in a major officeholder outside of Rod Blago in IL. Clinton laid low. Bush has kept a low profile and handled himself with unusual tact. Gore kept his head down after being VP. Bush Sr, Carter, Reagan... every former major executive had the good grace to step back and give the next guy time to breathe. Cheney has been running all over the country in the most desperately and pathetically transparent effort to rationalize and apoligize for one of the worst administration's in history in an attempt to save some face. We've never had a major US government official closer to international censure for war crimes, and he's out there trashing the current guy and telling everyone he's doing a terrible job becos he doesn't want to look like the shit VP he was. Fuck Dick. He deserves whatever demeaning comments they want to toss his way. When he can handle himself with class, I'll grant him some slack. But he's been a complete douchebag since leaving office and I won't be weeping any tears over the fact that someone finally called him on his childish bullshit.
