Ted Kaczynski Fights to Block Diaries/Possessions From Being Auctioned
Convicted terrorist Thedore 'Ted' Kaczynski, who launched a string of deadly bomb attacks across America, is fighting to stop his diaries being auctioned off.

Kaczynski is nearing the end of a five-year battle with U.S. authorities over the sale of his personal possessions, which also include tools, typewriters and clothing.

The so-called Unabomber was arrested in 1996 after a 17-year manhunt.

During that time he sent 16 mail bombs - killing three people and injuring 23.

Proceeds from the auction would go to four surviving victims of the attacks who are owed $15m in restitution by Kaczynski.

Kaczynski's 40,000 pages of diaries and writings are thought to be the most valuable of the auction items.

Should he be allowed to keep his possessions or is it better to auction them off and give the proceeds to his victims and their heirs?

Even though I believe he won't be allowed to keep his possessions, I think he should have the right to keep them mainly due to the fact that it's his constitutional right. It won't happen however because he owes restitution to the victims.

He is serving life without the possibility of parole in a supermax prison. Its not like he has any use for those posessions. Plus since he is serving life and can't really make money while being in prison and he owes the victims families 15million the only real way they can see any of those damages is for his stuff to be sold. Sounds pretty reasonable to me.

if you're for the idea of ownership, of private property (which I am not) you should be on the criminals side here.

you need to uphold the law, especially when its inconvenient.
  • This isn't a conspiracy theory, this is just an interesting anecdote from history.
It's also another great textbook example of blowback from government "intelligence" operations.

Back in the 50's and 60's the US government was hot to dose anyone they could up with LSD and just about anything else they could legally (or in plenty of cases, criminally) do to you under the aegis of psychological "testing".

Unfortunately for Mr. Kaczynski, he actually volunteered.
Lots of people did, actually. See Ken Kesey (RIP) for one awesomely famous example.
Anyhow, while sometimes psychedelia can inspire brilliance (Kesey), it can just as often agitate neurosis or bring full on temporary (almost by definition of the drug) or even permanent psychosis. I'm not giving Ted excuses, i'm just saying it sure is interesting.

It's not at all uncommon that criminals have their stuff auctioned off to pay restitution to the families. Honestly- you should never write something down if you don't want someone to read it- because they always will. (you're going to die someday & will not be there to prevent it) He gave up his right to privacy when he was acting out these crimes. Crimes against people who had nothing to do with him.

Was the $15 million part of his criminal trial or a civil trail?

If a court decides that you owe money to someone, shouldn't they be able to go after it? Because if not, then the judgment is only good for the basically the amount in your bank account. Why even have civil lawsuits if you can't be forced to pay the penalty (or at least more than cash on hand)?
