PORT ORCHARD, Wash. -- Cadaver dogs brought in to search a construction site where a severed foot was found over the weekend alerted handlers on Monday that there may be more body parts in the area.
It was not yet known if what the dogs sensed was from a human body, but the dogs are trained to detect human remains.
Detectives cleared the area and are waiting for the arrival of a state crime scene response team to help dig and search the location where the dogs were sniffing when they alerted, said Kitsap County sheriff spokesman Scott Wilson.
The human foot was found inside a hiking boot Saturday at the site near Bethel Road SE and Lund Avenue in Port Orchard.
Wilson said he believes the boot was dragged to the construction site, by either an animal or piece of equipment, and was not severed where it was found.
Officials didn't say whether it was a right or left foot, or whether it had belonged to a male or female.
A number of severed feet have been found inside athletic shoes up and down the shorelines of lower British Columbia in recent months, but there was no indication whether this foot was linked to them in any way.
None of the severed feet in Canada were found at inland locations like the Port Orchard foot.
Investigators said construction workers had seen the boot lying at the construction site a few days before but didn't take much notice of it until Saturday when someone discovered the foot inside.
