If you can find anything downtown you should be good.

If you're finding absolutely everything in Austin booked and you need to go somewhere in some nearby town outside the city, try moving south down the I-35 corridor.

San Marcos, New Braunfels. Even San Antonio is just an hour or so away.

You can also go north on 35 (Round Rock, Pflugerville, Georgetown) ... but traffic can be a bitch that direction.

I couldn't even imagine the traffic going in and leaving for ACL. I heard Roo was horrible- and it's not even in the city!!!!

That's why all festivals should have a camping site- SO much easier. You wake up and you're there

this is the 1st year that we haven't had to book a room. we're staying w/ friends this year, thankfully.

the traffic heading South on I-35 isn't that bad as long as you head toward downtown earlier in the day. even if you don't feel like heading to Zilker that early, there's plenty to see/do downtown until you're ready to go. we stayed in North Austin the last couple of years & it wasn't bad at all. i think we stayed at the Best Western off of Hwy 183 last year & the price was reasonable.

don't get frustrated about finding a room...just take your time & you'll find a decent room at a decent price. try all of those websites (expedia, priceline, etc) or even try calling the hotels directly. they may have availability that isn't listed online.

Try what's known as the Arboretum area. Do a Google map search for Austin, Arboretum, businesses and you should get a list of several hotels. From the Arboretum all you need to do is head down Mopac to get to ACL - and I'd suggest a cab. There's no parking for ACL. Also, there will probably be locations where you can get a bus that's dedicated to ACL. The hotel should be able to give you info on this. People in Austin are really friendly and helpful. New Braunfels etc is pretty far - about halfway between San Antonio and Austin. But you may end up having to go that far. Before you do that though I'd try Pflugerville and Round Rock if you have no luck with the Arboretum area.

    Hope this helps! ;)

If you're ok with dormitory kind of room, there's youth hostels where you can go.
I've always been pleased with this.
The best network is Hostelling International. It's cheap, friendly and often close to downtown. They offer a lot of services. I think they also have private rooms.

I have reservations at the HoJo just south of the City on I35. It is not in a perfect area nor the nicest hotel but we are on a budget this time around since we plan on hitting up other shows so we are making due. It is a 3 or 4 miles South of the downtown and I hear it is fairly easy to either take a bus or cab into the city and catch the shuttle to Zilker.

I did quite a bit of research and am still keeping an eye out for something closer to the city but am reasonablly satisfied right now. I have been on the ACL message board quite a bit as well and some other festival goers will be staying there as well.

Yeah, I bought three day passes the day the schedule was announced. I was following the rumors pretty closely and was pumped to see such a great lineup.
