"Strasburg vs. Nats is shaping up as biggest battle in draft history"

This guy throws in the upper 90's, sometimes hitting 100-103 mph, and has a good curveball. But he has not pitched in the majors yet, and is expected to ask for a $50 mil contract!

This is getting ridiculous. This is why I never go to any more games or watch baseball on TV. I make an average salary, but just cant afford it anymore, and these guys are just driving up the costs. fuck 'em all.

I'm Here in DC and trust they need ALL the help they can get. With a brand new stadium which is always empty, they'll any star attraction to draw some fans into the ballpark.

However, to pay this untested player that amount of money is ridiculous IMO. A new agreement is needed with these college and High school players, anyone remember Brian Taylor who never made it to the majors. MLB draft is always a crap shoot but it also tends to be a very expensive too.

The problem is that MLB already gives clubs a "suggested" signing bonus for draftees but they regularly disregard these suggestions and overpay for kids who have never played in the big leagues and may never do so.

If I remember correctly....Gregg Jefferies was gonna help the Mets win a butt-load of World Series titles when he was drafted, Eric Lindros was gonna win the same amount of Stanley Cups for the Flyers, Tim Couch was going to lead a Championship Football revival in Cleveland......the draft is always a gamble in any sport.

remember the last time a flame thrower was this good. yea where's mark prior now. also if the nats rush him, hes gonna be a bust. i understand his a big ticket draw but you gotta look at long term with him and develop him into a pitcher. major league hitters will figure this kid out in no time.

The NBA is the only league that does this right since they have a structured rookie pay scale. Hopefully the NFL and MLB will follow suit because this is just getting out of hand. The amount of $ these guys are guaranteed without ever stepping on the field is ridiculous.

I don't know if there's any way to "figure out" a 103mph fastball. I don't care how good a hitter you are, you can't see that ball.

Did I say just his fastball. I meant his overall work. Prior had a fastball that was clocked at 101 and look at where he is. Kris benson ring a bell. another "can't miss" talent. I could go on and on bout "can't miss" talent that failed. If all he's got is that fastball then he will fail big time. Its all hype by boras and espn.

It sounds familiar, but I can't place it. I'll grant you, if all you have is one pitch, they're just going to swing and get it most of the time. But even if they can get the timing well enough to hit it, I still don't think they're really seeing what they're swinging at.

I don't think that will ever happen, unfortunately. All these long-term contracts are backloaded with huge salaries in the later years of the contracts.

I know it won't happen, the players union in baseball has way too much power.

Well, that's why I stopped going. I stopped supporting MLB in every way possible. I dont go to games, buy the hats, watch the games or anything... I try to get all my friends and family to join my bandwagon, and you should too, then one day maybe the crowds at the parks will start to thin out. then the players salaries may come back to reality (doubt it, but it could happen).

I heard the Yankees were reducing costs of seats a lot this year after they were unable to fill the expensive seats. so maybe these new pitchers they spent 500 million on could have accepted 400 million instead, and then the average schmo like me could go to a damn game.

But why blame the players? It's the owners paying them this money... Would you take less money to do the job you do? Hell no!

Nope I wouldn't either when you really think about it. I would want to try and get every penny I could get my hands on.

    yeah, that is true.
but it's a little different when you're making a few million vs. what I make. my biggest gripe is the players who keep changing teams for more money. I wish more players would stay put and build a damn team.

Yeah.. Sports is such a business now, and with the possibility of getting hurt at any minute, I don't blame the players for trying to make as much as they can during their primes.

I'm sure his asking price wouldn't be so high if Boras wasn't his agent. Apparently his curveball clocks in at 86 though.

It would be a ridiculous asking price if his curveball was 106. Way too much risk/reward. Even if he's the best pitcher ever, he'll jet in a few years before he really effects the Nats. I attribute it solely to Boras. He doesn't care about making his clients rich, or how all of this crap is gonna affect their careers, as long as he cashes in as much as possible, as fast as possible.
