The problem with MSG in 2008 is the same problem with the new Yankee stadium, the good seats are gobbled up by folks with money from out of town who are not as rabid as fans as the ones sitting further back. There should definitely be a limit to the amount of Ten club seats available to those outside the area the show is being held, that would open those seats up to locals who are not fan club members but would still go to the show.

Again the comparison I'm making is from my own experiences in '96 and '98, there were not all these out of towners who gobbled up tickets on the internet before locals who are not fan club members even had a chance. I know I've read that Pearl Jam sold a few thousand fan club tickets each night to MSG '08, unfortunately from my own estimate at least half of those (if not more) were sold to people who don't even live in the area. The Ten club should set aside a certain number of seats for folks who live within 100 miles of the venues, if the seats don't sell they can open them up for people from outside the area.

I've seen Pearl Jam in Seattle and Oakland, both times I purchased my tickets on Ticketmaster the day they went on sale to the general public.

Why does it matter if the fans come from the area or not? Who gives a fuck? If you want to see a Pearl Jam show in a place nobody travels to from out of town, move to Alabama.

Or, maybe you can convince Pearl Jam to play a show in your living room.

I seriously don't understand this bias against people traveling from out of town. I read that as: "I couldn't sit as close as I wanted, so the show sucked. Waa waa waaa!"

Because it keeps out the locals who are not fan club members who would otherwise go to the show, give locals who are not Ten club members a chance to buy those premium seats.

I find it cute that you think if the Ten Club didn't have those "premium" seats at MSG, they'd go to Joe Blow off the street.

They wouldn't. They'd go to scalpers and industry insiders, same as it works for most acts.

I honestly don't understand your point. How would prohibiting Ten Club members from having the best seats improve YOUR concert experience?

The tickets would go on Stub Hub which anyone could bid on, you don't need to pay a yearly membership to be able to buy tickets on Stub Hub.

Tickets are generally scalped on Stub Hub through ticket brokers... not all of them, but the very good seats are usually snatched up in bulk by ticket brokers and then liquidated at a high markup through various markets such as StubHub. Being a part of the 10c allows us to get first dibs at GOOD seats at FACE VALUE so we don't have to resort to places like StubHub or Ticketsnow or even Ticketmaster.

I bought my tickets for MSG 9/10/98 from a local ticket vendor (they're legal in NJ), I got floor seats better than what the Ten Club gave me at MSG in 2008. I paid less than half for the '98 MSG ticket from a broker than I did for the tickets from the Ten Club last year, I know your going to mention inflation but things haven't changed that much price wise in the past 10 years (save for gas).

My only issue with Ten Club providing "first dibs" is that they were bought up by people from outside of the area, if those tickets were reserved for Ten Club members who's addresses are within 100 miles of the venue the remaining tickets could have gone to the open market (Ticketmaster, Stub Hub, local NJ Vendors etc..). Those would be available to anyone, not just people with Ten CLub memberships. So the casual Pearl Jam fan from Dyker Heights would have just as much of a chance to buy those tickets as "Carla from Italy" or "Joe from Phoenix" who bought them months in advance from the Ten Club.

I went to see Pearl Jam open for the Stones in '97 and I saw both Pearl Jam Seattle shows in 2000, I bought those tickets through Ticketmaster. I would feel guilty using my Ten club membership to get first dibs on seats that locals who are not Ten Club members but have probably been to see Pearl Jam at the Off Ramp, Drop in the Park etc.. would not be able to bid on themselves.

I think for venues only a certain amount should be set aside for Ten club members (there were way too many at MSG last year, most of whom were from out of the area), and those seats should be offered to Ten club members who live within a certain distance (100 miles) from the venue. If those seats are not all sold out the remaining should go to Ten club members with the most senior membership numbers, the casual Pearl jam fans at various cities should not be shut out of the opportunity to buy premium seats for shows at their local venues because some Ten club member from Chile thought it would be cool see Pearl jam in New York. I have nothing against traveling to see bands, again I've seen Pearl Jam three times on the West Coast. However they should not got early dibs on premium seats, they should wait for the time and date the tickets go on sale to the general public and log in or call at those times. That way it's an even field for "Bill from Manhassett" or "Mario from Farmingdale" who are Pearl Jam fans (seen them at Randall's Island '96, MSG '98 and Jones Beach '00 etc) but are not Ten Club members.

One of the biggest reasons I'm so excited about seeing Pearl Jam in Chicago this year is because there are going to people from the Ten Club traveling from all over to see the show. I think it will improve both nights. Sure my seats might not be as good as the other times I've seen them at the United Center. I've got no problem with that. One thing I've learned about seeing this band live over the years is how big of an impact a good crowd can have on their performance. Like MSG in 2003 or Grand Rapids in 2006.

Lets fill the United Center with as many out of towners as we can. If they are willing to travel however many miles to see the band, then they must be a pretty big fan of their music. Hopefully everyone will cheer loud and sing along and show the band the love they deserve. I'm sure they will reward us with two very special nights.

The face value of a Pearl Jam ticket in 2008 was much higher than 1998. I'm guessing more than double. Probably $30-$35 in 1998 compared to almost $85 in 2008.

I just want to point out that you could only use your Ten Club tickets on a single show back in 2000. So you probably saw them somewhere local with your 10C seats and had no choice but to use Ticketmaster if you wanted to see them in Seattle that year. I don't know if I buy the fact that you did it so you wouldn't feel guilty. Especially since we're talking about 9 years ago. Probably before you had a negative opinion on out of town people going to a show. I don't think it was nearly as common when Binaural came out. A lot of us were teenagers or in college and you couldn't get tickets to multiple shows through the fan club.

By no means am I contemplating my - or anyone else's - mortality, but I have felt old ever since the Conan performance and would pay good money to translate my thoughts/feelings into words.

It's funny, I can tell you exactly where I was when I listened to each and every Pearl Jam album and appreciate their ability to perfectly capture certain points in my life (the same goes for concerts). I love them for that and I love music's ability to momentarily stop time and provie continuous opportunities in the future to go back to that music, that time, that moment.

In a lot of ways, Pearl Jam will be forever and I will be forever appreciative of their timelessness. But it's got to change at some point, doesn't it? Maybe it already has and I'm just missing it. They're not the same band and I'm okay with that; they've grown up and matured and adapted and we've been right there the whole time.

Part of me doesn't want them to change, doesn't want this to change and doesn't even want to think about things changing.

Do you think this is how our folks felt growing up with a band, too?

i'm not sure how my parents feel but i do know that i personally don't do well with nostalgic thoughts when it comes to music...especially in 2009 when things are moving sooo fast in every direction(i love the internet)

everything changes...sometimes in life the only thing consistent IS change. fighting change is hard work

but um i don't look back as much as i look forward in music, but i suppose that is also because PJ are still very much happening right now

soooo for me it's all about todaaay, and especially the new cd :)

i run really fast towards the new songs and with open arms

    baaaaa

I read somewhere that the Elderly Woman was actually a woman aged only in her early 40s. ;)

mandi - aw! you're so sweet! *hugs*

with what you're saying with the connection thing......
sure when I first heard them as a teen the connection was about the music.
but it freaked me out and was unbelievable to me when the more time went by I found a connection beyond the music. hope I don't sound like a stalker. lol! but things like pj helps out Neil with the bridge school benefit. Neil has a kid with Cerebral Palsy. that school helps special kids. I have cerebral palsy too. I mean, things like that. I could go on, but I’m not. ;) it's having those connections beyond just liking the music. knowing and hearing how wonderful the guys are helps too, to be a fan. not to put them on a petal stool, but they seem 'real' to me. really good men.

as far as them putting family first.....
I would want them to! if they didn't, it'd turn me off.
I think they work pretty hard on their music. I’m always amazed how fast they turn out albums. but that's just me.
