What's your story of the week?

Here's mine for now....Muslim Store Owner Thwarts Attempted Robbery; Shows Mercy To Contrite Crook
“This was a grown man, crying like a baby,” Mohammad Sohail, owner of the Shirley Express convenience store about 65 miles (100 kilometers) east of New York City, told The Associated Press in a telephone interview on Tuesday.

The man dropped the bat, picked up the bread and tucked the $40 into his waistband before fleeing, said Suffolk County police Sgt. John Best.

Sohail, who moved to the United States from Pakistan about 20 years ago, said he was getting ready to close his store shortly after midnight on May 21 when the man in his 40s entered with a bat in his hand. Sohail said he tried to stall for a moment and then grabbed a rifle he keeps behind the counter and ordered the assailant to drop the bat.

The would-be thief dropped to his knees and begged for forgiveness, Sohail said.

“He started crying that he was out of work and was trying to feed his hungry family,” he said. “I felt bad for him. I mean, this wasn’t some kid.”

The debate on is year round school is better for children instead of the long summer break we mostly have in this country.

I think YRS maybe a good idea for inner city children as it may keep these children out of trouble and continue their educational processing. However where will the money come from to fund this program and there needs to be specific educational offerings such as vocational activities and the arts. Many schools don't even offer these subjects during the school year.

Here are few links on this on going debate...

My story of the week: the shooting at the Holocaust museum. This is such a horrible story especially of the killing of the officer Stephen Tyrone Johns. He apparently opened the door to let the shooter and then was fatally shot and killed only because of the color of his skin in which ultimately can not control.

I can't find the image but there's a photo of the museum where you can see the bullet holes in the glass. I would suggest the museum take out that glass and others with the holes and place them in an exhibit at the end of the tour to remind people around the world that hate towards people because of race or religeous beliefs still exists in America especially in a museum such as the Holocaust Museum. This could also should be done in honor of officer Johns in that he gave his life to protect those visiting the museum.

This is Netanyahu saying no to Obama Palestine will never agree to this and rightfully so

Netanyahu Speech to Outline Conditions for Palestine

The conditions he is expected to put forward include:

    • Any Palestinian state must be demilitarized, without an air force, full-fledged army or heavy weapons.

    • Palestinians may not sign treaties with powers hostile to Israel.

    • A Palestinian state must allow Israeli civilian and military aircraft unfettered access to Palestinian airspace, allow Israel to retain control of the airwaves and to station Israeli troops on a future state’s eastern and southern borders.

    • Palestinians must accept Israel as a Jewish state, a nod to the hawkish side of Mr. Netanyahu’s governing coalition that has raised concerns that the Palestinian Authority, which nominally governs the West Bank, does not recognize Israel as a Jewish state.

I just started a thread on it, but I think the story of the week this week for me is the Iranian Elections.

Troops fatalities continue to mount in Afghanistan as 7 are killed today.

Sadly, why do I get the feeling this war is going down the same path as the war in Iraq. My story for the last 2 weeks.

Lack of Media Attention to the Isareli Attack on Justice Boat For Humanitarian Aid
IPSC spokesperson Freda Hughes, addressing the crowd, said: “The abduction of the 21 Free Gaza activists from international waters, 23 miles off the coast of Gaza, is an abhorrent breach of international law by the Israeli state. However, we must remember that despite this particular outrage, this is part of an ongoing brutal siege on Gaza, which in turn is merely one facet of Israel’s slow and deliberate ethnic cleansing of the Palestinian people.”
Ms Hughes continued: “The blatant lack of Irish media coverage of such a monumental event, which has a particular Irish context, is a disgrace and mirrors the general bias evident in the Irish media when it comes to the issue of the occupation of Palestine.”
Ms Hughes concluded: “In order for the Irish public to effect positive change in regard to the unjust occupation of Palestine, our most effective course of action is to adopt a policy of complete economic, cultural, sporting and academic boycott of Israel. The Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign has been to the forefront of the campaign for Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions”.

The recent rise in crimes by returning soldiers to Fort Carson from Iraq in Colorado Springs, CO. Are the powers that be at the Pentagon paying attention to this major issue.

Army: Fort Carson Soldiers in Slayings Faced Heavy Iraq Combat
The study comes as the Army struggles with other combat-related issues, including increased rates of post-traumatic stress syndrome and soldier suicides.

A study last year by the RAND Corp. think tank estimated that nearly 20 percent of returning veterans, or 300,000 people, have symptoms of PTSD or major depression.

Army suicides have increased yearly since 2004 as soldiers deal with longer and repeated tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. Eleven soldiers at Fort Campbell, Ky., have killed themselves this year, and the Army has made suicide prevention training mandatory.

The Colorado slayings include the 2008 deaths of a man and a woman killed by a man with an AK-47 assault rifle as they put up garage-sale signs on a street. Pfc. Jomar Dionisio Falu-Vives is charged with first-degree murder. He told friends he fired on the couple while driving and liked hearing the sirens as authorities raced to the scene, according to police.

In May, Thomas Woolly, a Fort Carson soldier and Purple Heart recipient, was charged with manslaughter in the slaying of a 19-year-old woman. Woolly was in Fort Carson's Warrior Transition Unit, for soldiers who were injured or have psychiatric disorders.

In October, Spc. Robert Hull Marko led investigators to the body of 19-year-old Judilianna Lawrence, whom he met on the Web site MySpace. Police said Marko told investigators he had violent sex with Lawrence before slitting her throat and leaving her to die in the foothills west of Colorado Springs.
