wow that's tough. not sure if i would say this is best overall, but since i don't think it's been said yet,
leash.
into the wild lyrics are pretty mind blowing at the moment though
"Ah, life is a gate, a way, a path to Paradise anyway, why not live for fun and joy and love or some sort of girl by a fireside, why not go to your desire and LAUGH..."
Terribly generic lyric and song idea. How can you say that is the best?
Tremor Christ and I Got Shit strike me as genius.
Tell you what's 'terribly generic', the chorus of I Got Shit.
'We're learning songs for baby Jesus' birthday. His mum and dad were Merry and Joseph. He had a bed made of clay and the three kings bought him Gold, Frankenstein and Merv as presents.'
The best ever!!!
I mean the way Ed described this song as like a way building and finally crashing is spot on. This song has gotten me through a lot of hard times, and i always go back to it. Peace, J

"I'll tell you what: If all I had was Pearl Jam, and I didn't have another band in the world, I would not be worried. Because in there is the essence of making great music. You don't have to use it all at once, but it's there." - Neil Young
"All thats sacred comes from youth
Dedications, naive and true
With power and nothin to do
I still remember, why don't you. don't you!!!!
Rocked out as a 17 year old to those words, feeling powerless with no money and nothing to do. Loved it from the first moment that I rushed home from a high school party to see SNL and hearing a great new song...Pearl Jam rocked SNL that night.
Today as a 31 year old I feel the lines Ed sang at my age..."I still remember..why don't you" Very great lyrics that hit me at 2 different perspectives in life..as an angst ridden teen, and an adult trying not to forget that reckless abondon I had as a youth. And it's hard to capture that feeling and spirit in a song, but Ed nailed it.

Love Boat Captain. Lyrically it is amazing; it's hard to write something that is sad and painful and at the same time, truthful and uplifting. This song, I think, nails what life and living is about.
Agreed for reals.
Guaranteed, Black, No More. Wow this is a lot harder than I thought it would be.
Honorable mention to Present Tense, the lyrics of which helped pull me out of sorrow more than a few times. Segue to Inside Job...

Very simple lyrical format, but the concept is so powerful for me.
