Ed and wine...
How does he do it? I'm not the worlds biggest drinker but I know the difference between a wine buzz and any other buzz. I like wine, but it basically makes me tired, especially a whole bottle of red. Yet this guy is out there with crazy energy. Oh I don't get it, who cares...
Further back and forth a wave will break on me, today...

How much wine do you think he actually drinks during a show?
I wondered because he always seems like he is totally together, maybe a little buzzed but certainly not as wasted as he should be if he drank multiple bottles of wine.
The bottle of wine Ed drinks is probably equivalent to 5 glasses of wine assuming the glass was completely full. I'm pretty sure he does have water up there too, and over a span of a 2-2.5 hr show He drinks it pretty slowly between songs.

I'm a big wine drinker and I couldn't see myself downing a bottle + and being able to perform as well as Ed does. Someone did make a point that your tolerance level increases the more you drink however if Ed drank as much as we think he does every night during the tour he'd be a raging alcoholic in which case his tolerance would actually begin to decrease.

It is not just building up a tolerance to alcohol that allows one person's poison to become another's nectar, although that does play a role. For example, scientific studies have definitely proven that the effects of alcohol for women are stronger than for men. It is not just the difference in body mass. Women actually metabolize alcohol differently than men metabolize it. Also, why does one person become an alcoholic and another not, even though they drink the same amount of liquor? Individual chemistry determines a lot. I can drink hard liquor like juice. The most alcohol I ever consumed was when I was 19, I had 24 tequila sunrises as part of a drinking contest. And I am not an alcoholic, because that was more than twenty years ago. I haven't drunk hard liquor for at least twenty years, because I just don't enjoy it. However, to this day, I cannot drink two glasses of red wine without feeling like I need to go to bed.

i think it's more to help loosen up his vocal chords than to get smashed.
I think this is probably true. The more relaxed the vocal cords, the less damage you will do to them. This is why a lot of performers take beta blockers, to help keep them relaxed. The problem with alcohol for this purpose it also deadens you to any damage you might be doing by straining, because you cannot feel the pain as intensely.

Then again, i never saw any wine at all during his 2 Vancouver solo shows...did he break out the wine bottle during any of the other solo gigs?

Yeah you just finished college so you're what 23, 24 at most? Fast forward 10-20 years and lets see if you say the same thing. I could drink a hell of a lot more in my late teens/early 20s than I can now.

If you're drinking just as much as before and your tolerance is weakening that's not a good thing!
