Meaning of Backspacer

all I can think of is the Backspace button on a computer keyboard. Is this a reference to someone who makes mistakes / corrections / errors when typing and therefore needs to use the backspace key?
A child's rhyme stuck in my head...
It said "Life is nothing but a dream."
I've spent so many years in question
To find I'd known this all along.

    Or the turtle was named after the album. R.E.M.'s turtle was named Nightswimmer.
