Backspacer name meaning...

It could mean that Ed had a lot of trouble coming up with lyrics for the songs and had to backspace a lot...

On old typewriters the backspace key says "Backspacer"

like so...

    My first impression is that it is (at least) partly a political reference. I think it is referring to the erasure of damage that was done in the past... a little bit more of a hopeful ring than Riot Act.

    I'm interested in hearing some of the songs, and how they might work in this view.

    Pretty sure they named it after the album... the 1st turtle they promoted was named Leatherman I believe.

    AND R.E.M's turtle was called 'Night-swimmer'

    That's what I believe as well. With an album called Backspacer, and a track called "The Fixer", something tells me this is going to be an Obama reference-heavy album.

    I said something similar yesterday when everybody was talkin all this Obama mumbo jumbo. Wouldn't be surprised one bit if BO'b made Ed raise the bar.

    Doubt it says "backspacer" since that cover is for the single.

    I figured something out even better last week from a clue-in-passing on the board. Can't disclose since it has something to do with the personal privacy of the band. That one reeeeally made me confident in my detective skills. :)

    By erasure of damage, I am referring to the hope of what is to come. I think that a possible intention for the title is the personification of a 'backspacer' in Obama. To me the title is implying that he has the power (or perhaps the responsibility) to correct past mistakes.

    I think you use the backspacer to fix mistakes. It allows you the chance to move backwards, erase something, and then re-type it. :)
