School Bus.

Here we again only in the sunshine state Florida.

A Florida high school student was suspended after he disarmed another student who allegedly threatened to shoot someone while on a school bus.

An unnamed 16-year-old student from Cypress Lake High School in Fort Myers, Fla., was suspended for three days after he disarmed a 15-year-old peer who allegedly threatened to shoot another student with a loaded revolver during a Feb. 26 fight on a school bus, according WFTX.

"It's dumb," the suspended student told the station. "How they going to suspend me for doing the right thing?"

It seems a little ridiculous, but according to the article he refused to cooperate with police. His mother said he wasn't raised a "snitch". To me that deserves a suspension.

The kid absolutely did the right thing. It's important to note though (from the article):

Officials later revealed the student was suspended because he didn't cooperate with the investigation.

So, he wasn't suspended for what he did, it was for what happened after the fact.

Yeah, that seems to be a detail either missing from most reports or buried deep down in them. Supposedly this kid (and the other two who also helped and were suspended as well) not only didn't cooperate, they also lied to the police.

Not being a "snitch" is all well and good, but there's a limit. And I think matters of life and death are past that limit. It's not like they didn't want to snitch out some kid who had a bag of weed or something, they didn't want to be forthcoming with the police concerning a student who was waving a gun around on a school bus. The school used the technicality of them being in an altercation on the bus as grounds for suspension, possibly so as to not go on their record as sounding like something criminal.

Not "snitching" on a student who brings a gun to school, especially in this day and age, is not the kind of behavior I think anybody wants to applaud.

For all the talk of not snitching, they seem to be willing to tell any member of the press who will listen the whole story. If they'd been as talkative with the police, instead of sticking to a misguided code of honor, they would be treated as heroes instead of being suspended.

Are you kidding me? If I squealed on every kid that had a weapon!!! There are some things that make you feel safe, and there are some things you never speak about. I hate a certain person and he would be in prison for the crap he has done.

Snitches get STITCHES ... This is what I am taught.

I have never had stitches. I feel bad for this kid... He did the right thing, even though there were social consequence events

Are you kidding ME? You're cool with kids carrying weapons? And furthermore, carrying them to school? As this story points out, this kid pulled his weapon over some argument at football practice. Kids aren't smart or mature enough to have that kind of responsibility. Many adults aren't either, but kids sure as hell aren't.

If your child (I don't know if you have one, if not, you're theoretical child) got shot and killed at school by some kid, and it turned out other kids knew that kid was carrying, would you accept "snitches get stitches" as a reasonable explanation for your child being dead?

As I said, snitching is one thing, being responsible with the lives of others is another. I'm not talking about going and ratting out every kid for every little thing (I'd probably spent a good portion of my life in prison as well), I'm just talking about avoiding kids getting shot and killed. This kid didn't use his weapon to stay safe, he tried to use it to settle a BS argument.

    Very well-said, SF.

Gotta say his mother's attitude irked me some too.
  • Ditto. Well said SF. and by the way, I still always enjoy seeing the pic you use even thought I don't know what the hell it is, it just seems to fit well with many of the threads here!

It was when PJ were musical guest on SNL several years back and made a cameo in a sketch that was a parody of an old Twilight Zone episode.

I don't have children.. I have been "In Charge " of violent youths, and I've seen some weapons. This poor kid is going to get an ass whipping. That is not fair. Most of the time, telling the truth is worse then trying to come up with a lie :?

So I wrote something about depending on what part of the country a person hails from, so comes their variation of what a redneck means. Now your idea Staysea, is one I'm not familiar with!
In the west, a redneck is one who lives a creed similar to the same top 20 countdown theme tunes -- country that is!

How exactly does one go about being "in charge" of violent youths with weapons?

I accept and embrace those that call me a red neck...

They are misguided and I don't have the time. A majority of them say they are not prejudice.

I'm not a red neck but it's all kewl. Maybe next week I can be a red neck...
