Nirvana Live at Reading

  • Who is that guy dancing on stage?

I believe he was one of Kurt's assistants. He and another person used to keep an eye on Francis.

Come to think of it, I think he is also the guy dressed in drag on the In Utero CD.

I downloaded the audio and it sounds good. But wait until you hear the Smells Like Teen Spirit solo. Oh my god. You know how some of Kurt's solos are so bad that they come all the way back around to good? Well this one is just plain bad.

I bought the CD today and loaded it into my car as soon as I got in. There are few songs where a chord was over shot or not hit at all. The opening to Drain You was kind of butchered. I thought the sound quality was alright. It was not the best live album I have ever heard as far as sound quality goes, but I am willing to look over that considering that when these guys performed this show, the idea of a live recording being released was probably not on their mind.

Also, Mudhoney does a much much much better cover of The Money Will Role Right In. Much Better. :)

i think that's just nirvana. outside of unplugged, every performance of theirs i ever heard was pretty sloppy. that's not really a bad thing necessarily, but they were never a particularly disciplined and tight live band. that's why they hired pat smear.

Oh yeah. Totally. I wasn't expecting to be blown away by their musicianship on this particular CD, I was just more or less saying I did not think the sound quality was up to par in comparison to other officially released live shows I have heard.

WRONG. Reading is an especially sloppy Nirvana show. On a good day Nirvana were reasonably tight. 10/31/91 and 12/28/91 are much tighter (and better sounding) shows, but they've probably opted to release Reading to put a stop to all the bootleg DVD's.

I wish they would've put out the Halloween show instead. Any footage I have seen or heard from that show has always been real solid.

I'm sure they'll make good use of it someday. Hopefully they'll re-work it from the ground up because they still have all the seperate camera angles. With Reading all they had was the main pro-shot (already mixed), a camera mounted over the stage, one or two amateur cameras, and the audio recording.
  • Anyone got any comments on how the Bleach re-release on vinyl sounds? I am looking to pick this up and am hoping that the remaster isn't too loud.

Also, anyone have a chance to check out the other re-released Nirvana albums?

I just recieved my copy in the mail today. A quick note: If you are contemplating buying this, or on the fence about the CD or DVD, the DVD is the COMPLETE show (including banter in between songs). The CD is edited down for time and excludes Love Buzz. Some might not care or are going for the best price which is fine. I am kind of a completist so I got the CD/DVD combo. I would love an audio copy for the car and can live without Love Buzz and the banter on the CD. But the show is so fuckin cool to watch. So much energy. Worth the extra $$ if you ask me.

    Peace.

I love the end when they destroy the stage.
    And the star spangled banner.

And you reckon people fought violently for the guitar Kurt gave to the crowd at the end?
Imagine that psycho dude from Philly show was there....

I wonder about that. A guitar is different from a pick or a drumstick. I can't imagine one person got it and everyone around him or her backed off cause they touched it first. There was definately a fight for that.

I just watched this and it was cool to hear the good songs, i used to worship nirvana years and years ago until i heard of PJ, AiC and SG and never looked back. Thought i'd buy this for the hell of it...just re enforced that they are a boring punk band mainly, lithium, come as you are, about a girl, on a plain are cool songs, they do have some songs but mainly a lot of just boring samey stuff. Their unplugged cd is just insanely good though.

I think after the while the whole stage trashing think got a bit stupid..

The guitar probably got ruined in the fight for it, all that pulling at it.

have to check that one out...

a lot of "closet Boston" (The rock band) fans turned up in the 90's grunge bands...

    same thing with Kiss...

both influenced many a grunge rocker..
