Time for PJ do something totally different this coming album

Postby DiRtyFranK38 » Sat Jan 05, 2013 11:23 pm

It's time for them to step out of their comfort zone. Not even asking for No Code part 2... Let's see some sign of the times experimentation... Something that is a leap for them, whether it be a conceptual thing, using different crazy instruments or incorporating some electronic shit like Radiohead, writing longer songs, or just making very edgy music in a new direction.

We all know they are 100% capable of all of the above. I love every single PJ album, but it is time for this. Backspacer, while a great record, is pretty easily their weakest for me (In PJ terms though). That was a very comfortable, safe, easy album for them. Short punk rockers and some beautiful cleaned up ballads. PJ could write songs like that blind folded.

I REALLY want to see something totally left field from PJ that shocks everyone and lands on those best albums of the decade lists. I'm thinking along the lines of like Radiohead, Arcade Fire, maybe Wilco, or even Tool... Just modern bands, relevant today who have their own experimental edge with each album... PJ did for a while... and it is time to step back up to the plate in 2013 with another new side.

 maybe, maybe. just trying to think outside of the box here... Mark Lanegan managed to pull it off on his latest album, Blues Funeral, amazingly... and I never would have pictured that

Backspacer is easily PJ's most disappointing album for me, so I'd be happy to see them do something in an opposite direction. I also hope that Brendan O'Brien quits acting as the new member of the band if he's around for the next album.

I say leave all the songwriting to Stone and we will have another classic PJ album...

I certainly would love to see more monster riffs from stone... and even some of his acoustic slow tracks. Ed's are great, but Stone's acoustic tunes, like All Or None are a different level.

Bring back the Jam (literally and metaphorically) and let them feel free in their own skin again. Great things are on their/our way.
Ooh, yeah! All right!
Were [Pearl] jammin
I wanna [Pearl] jam it wid you.
Were [Pearl] jammin, [Pearl] jammin
And I hope you like [Pearl] jammin too.

Saw Radiohead at Wuhlheide Berlin a couple of moths ago. Long electronica parts that could of been written by any electronica "band". Me and about a thousand others left after their main set. Never seen an audience that quiet during a show. The band themselves seems to enjoy listening to it though. But it would be horrible if PJ went down that road.

Question is: are PJ fans ready to see the band take a different approach with their music? I onestly don't think so.. Binaural and Riot Act (two of my favorites) contain many tracks that musically are very different from the rest of their catalog (even if the music is still guitar based and no electronica is involved).. at the same time, while some of us love these two albums, the majority of the fans always talk shit about them.. to name a few, how many times you see here negative opinions about songs like You Are, Cropduster, Help Help, Sleight Of Hand, Nothing as it Seems, etc.. I never will understand how someone can say that excellent pieces of music like NAIS and Cropduster are "show stopper" and shit like that.. the average fan of PJ deserve songs like The Fixer and Olé, and doesn't care too much about "innovation" and "experimentation"..
I'm sorry, but that's what I think.. and maybe that's what the band thinks too.. this would explain some decent but pretty average albums like Self Titled and Backspacer.. Hope I'm wrong though, and that the next album will be a pleasant surprise, full of "show stoppers" 8-)

PJ need an epic sprawling monster of a song that can be a live showpiece for all the band members. Something they've never attempted. I'm not saying something of 2112 or Supper's Ready proportions but at least breaking the 10 - 15 zone. They've proven for years that they can take songs past the 10 minute mark on stage so surely they'd be comfortable with it. I think PJ are the only true classic rock band of their type who don't have their own Stairway To Heaven. Of The Earth is a step in the right direction but it was written almost 7 years ago. They could do something truly amazing if they were bold enough and spent some real time locked in the studio.
Like a book among the many on a shelf...

Belfast Odyssey Arena - 23/6/10

Each album spoke to what I had been living. I found that amazing. I love Backspacer
and will love the new album. I have no PJ disappointments. In my life I don't think
I can say that about anything else.

I love the idea of more instruments. The strings they've used, awesome.
I would like harp, flute, more upright bass 8-), horns, and traditional piano,
some brushes solos too for the drums. Music is an incredible gift to give.
Can't wait to receive theirs :D

And I can't be sure if its yours or mine."
