what was Big Bold and Free?

I've seen countless mentions of it on the board. I know it's a sore spot with 10c-ers, so I'm not trying to open old wounds, or start a bitching thread, but I'm wondering what's the back story behind this?

It was mentioned as something coming to 10C members but never really came about. I cannot even remember when it was—maybe when Riot Act came out? Or was it self-titled? Anyone?

It was an attempt to cool the masses of the ticket debacle of the Borgata in 2005. It was mentioned, and then it was never mentioned again. And then threads disappeared. And that was the end of it.

    From Two Feet Thick:

    10-03-2005

Ed first addresses the crowd before “Given to Fly” with “well, we heard that you were uh … if you were waiting for us, know that we were waiting for you too … nice seeing you!”.

I don't remember the "nice seeing you" part.

You sure?...I seem to remember it being mentioned in the hype up of the RA or S/T release announcement. I wanna say RA era, but I seem to remember people wondering if WWS release was the BIG BOLD FREE, and even being told by 10c that wasn't it. Don't remember it bein some kinda apology, just a extra something they were gonna throw in.

A Love Letter to the fans:

It’s all love. And we just wanted to you to know … We love you because you love Pearl Jam. We love you because you participate in our Ten Club fun. We love you because of your enthusiasm and support for both Pearl Jam and the Ten Club. We love you because of your passion and dedication to music. It’s all love.

Like any other loving relationship, you must acknowledge that we are not perfect. We recognize we have some faults. Sometimes we send out newsletters too late, or the holiday single doesn’t come out during the holidays. Or we can only offer limited amount of tickets or merchandise, which leaves some of you without and extremely frustrated. Or sometimes our forums will go down, leaving you without your link to other fan club members. Or sometimes our web-store will not function properly for you and you are not able to purchase the items you are interested in … we want you to know we feel your pain. Every healthy relationship is a little push and pull, ebb and flow, up and down, so it’s nothing personal.

Pearl Jam and the Ten Club have been through many changes in the past year. The band has left their record label of 14 years and ventured into unstable but exciting territory of doing many things on their own. The Ten Club is a small operation and has taken on a lot of these endeavors, and we are learning many things along the way - your input is extremely helpful. During this transitional time, just know we are trying to make things better for you, to offer you more opportunities and include you more into the world of Pearl Jam.

That being said, we have high hopes that you will like us a whole lot more when all is said and done. We are planning to do something for our members early next year, to follow the release of the new record … something big, bold, beautiful, and free! So hang tight and enjoy the ride with us, continue to provide us with your input, and continue to spread the PJ love.

Did we mention that we love you? It’s all love.

    Always,

    ~Ten Club Staff

From my angle, I think they were gonna play a free show at MSG. Seems pretty solid this was the plan, to me at least.

In August 2005 PJ was in discussions with MSG to play in Feb 2006 (which is right in-line with the above letter). Then in November of 2005 they changed their hold to be May 2006. Then sometime in early 2006 they dropped their holds, and they ended up playing Storytellers on that date in May, and then also played Izod/Continental Airlines Arena around then too.

    2005 huh?

    Same problems. ;)

Of course, some of it is just silly as they have limited amount of tickets and they are hard to get. But the holiday single has gotten later and later.

So, what has gotten better? I'm sure something has to have. Refresh my memory.

I thought they specifically said it wasn't?

I remember a post from Sea saying that they had something planned and couldn't make it happen.

bought what? I wasn't even a member when it "happened", and I wanted to know what everyone was talking about all the time. I thought that was pretty clear.

Very nice letter and sentiment yes but they never made good on what the letter promised so as nice as it was, they didn't back it up. So in essence while trying to make amends for things they did wrong, they did something else wrong. They can't win  I'm sure they mean well.

of course nothing is perfect but when you have fans going around saying this is the best fanclub in the world it's kinda hard not to point those imperfections sometimes

But that's what fans do, they point out the best in their club, accept the imperfection, same with their favorite band they are a fan of. Fans are the loyal supporters, there's enough critics around, fans build up not tear down.
If a mistake was made, leave it at that, everyone makes mistakes. That was an awesome apology letter with very good intentions. I always go back to the fact, 10C doesn't have do all the nice things they do for the PJ fans, that comes from the love and appreciation the band has for their supporters.

Problem wasn't that they told us about Big Bold and Free, it was they now pretend it never existed. That part is pretty weak IMO.

    DEEP!

Hello??? Wasn't the 1st Deep issue released in early 2006, right around the time of Self-Titled? Timeline fits, & I thought that it was & still is big, bold, & beautiful (tho not entirely free ;)).
